What is a toll (obligation)?
Most countries in Europe charge toll fees. There is a so-called toll obligation. But what does that mean? So-called toll fees are charged for the use of many motorways and expressways as well as tunnels and bridges. The money generated by the toll is invested, for example, in the road network. This ensures a smooth journey on your way to your holiday. The primary areas of investment are infrastructure, traffic management and road safety, as well as environmental protection measures.

How is the toll charged in Montenegro?
Special toll on certain routes
In Montenegro there is no nationwide toll system. Accordingly, there is neither a vignette requirement nor a distance-based toll. So far, the toll obligation only applies to certain routes, so-called special toll routes. The special toll routes include a section of the A1 motorway (between Smokovac and Mateševo) and the Sozina Tunnel (located on the E80 between Podgorica and Bar). The kilometres driven play no role. You only pay a flat fee, tied to your vehicle. However, the amount of the special toll fee may vary depending on the vehicle class.
Regulations and vehicle classes
Regulations
The decisive factors for distinguishing between vehicle classes are the vehicle's axles as well as its height and permissible total weight. The following regulations apply:
Cars: Motor vehicles with a front axle height over 1.3 m and a total height over 1.9 m are charged a higher toll.
Combinations: Combinations with a towing vehicle with a front axle height over 1.3 m, combinations with a towing vehicle with a total height over 1.9 m, and combinations (towing vehicle + trailer) with a gross vehicle weight over 3.5 t are charged a higher toll.
Motorhomes: Motorhomes with a gross vehicle weight over 3.5 t are charged a higher toll.
Vehicle classes
These regulations allow motor vehicles to be divided into the following vehicle classes:
Class I: Motorcycles, quads and trikes
Class II: Motor vehicles (2 axles) with a front axle height up to 1.3 m and motor vehicles with a gross vehicle weight up to 3.5 t and a total height up to 1.9 m.
Class III: Motor vehicles (3 or more axles) with a front axle height up to 1.3 m and a total height up to 1.9 m, and motor vehicles (2 axles) with a weight up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight and a total height over 1.9 m.
Class IV: Motor vehicles (up to 3 axles) with a gross vehicle weight over 3.5 t and a front axle height over 1.3 m, as well as motor vehicles (2 axles) with a gross vehicle weight up to 3.5 t and a total height over 1.9 m with a trailer.
Class V: Motor vehicles (4 or more axles) with a gross vehicle weight over 3.5 t and a front axle height over 1.3 m
Paying the special toll
Toll fees are paid in cash or by card at the toll stations. In addition, you can purchase a chargeable electronic transponder at the toll stations, which must also be topped up with a minimum balance. Electronic transponders are used for the automatic deduction of toll fees and can make your journey easier. Interesting to know: In Montenegro you can pay with euros everywhere and therefore do not need to exchange money for your trip.
