What is a toll (obligation)?
Most countries in Europe charge toll fees. There is a so-called toll obligation. But what does that mean? For the use of many motorways and expressways as well as tunnels and bridges, so-called toll fees are charged. The amounts of money gained through the toll are invested, for example, in the road network. This ensures a smooth journey on your way to your holiday. The primary areas for investment are infrastructure, traffic management and road safety, as well as environmental protection measures.
Infrastructure: construction and maintenance of roads and motorways
Road safety and traffic management: new technologies such as intelligent traffic systems or toll gantries
Environmental protection: expansion of noise barriers or measures to reduce emissions
How is the toll charged in Estonia?
In Estonia, no toll fees are charged for vehicles up to 3.5 t for the use of motorways, tunnels and bridges. This means you can use all routes completely worry-free and remain toll-free. However, please note that on your way to Estonia you may cross other countries that charge a toll for the use of the road network.
However, there is a time-based truck toll. This toll covers all public roads and applies to all vehicles over 3.5 t. This also includes heavy motorhomes over 3.5 t, if they are registered as trucks. If your motorhome is not also registered as a truck, then your motorhome remains toll-free.
The toll is calculated based on various criteria (usage time in days, emission class, weight below/above 12 t and number of axles). Payment of the truck toll is made either online in advance or at various border stations on site (by credit card).
