What is the Bözberg Tunnel?
The Bözberg Tunnel is located in the north of Switzerland on the A3 motorway (from Basel to Sargans) between Basel and Zurich. It was put into operation in 1996. The construction of the tunnel created a direct alternative to the previously used Belchen Tunnel, thereby also enabling a bypass of the city of Brugg. Planning for the Bözberg Tunnel dates back to the 1950s, and construction took around eight years. The route initially runs over the Bözberg Pass and then through the Aare Valley.
New construction
Since the existing Bözberg Tunnel did not meet current requirements for the clearance profile (corner height of 4.0 metres), a new tunnel construction was necessary between May 2015 and May 2022. The project volume was estimated at around 133.5 million euros. The new tunnel is about 2,700 metres (2.7 km) long and has two tubes, running parallel to the existing railway tunnel at a distance of 30 to 50 metres.
Is the Bözberg Tunnel subject to a toll?
The use of the Bözberg Tunnel is subject to the vignette requirement for vehicles up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight or the obligation to pay the heavy vehicle charge for vehicles over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight. The tunnel is therefore subject to a toll, and appropriate authorisation is required.
Unlike tunnels subject to a special toll, such as the Great St. Bernard Tunnel or the Munt-La-Schera Tunnel, however, no additional fees apply beyond the vignette or the paid heavy vehicle charge. The Bözberg Tunnel is not one of the special toll routes.
