The Bözberg Tunnel is located in the north of Switzerland on the A3 motorway (from Basel to Sargans), between Basel and Zurich. It was opened to traffic in 1996. The construction of the tunnel created a direct alternative to the previously used Belchen Tunnel and also allows traffic to bypass the city of Brugg. Planning for the Bözberg Tunnel dates back to the 1950s, and construction took approximately eight years. The route initially runs over the Bözberg Pass and then continues through the Aare Valley.
As the existing Bözberg Tunnel no longer met the current clearance profile requirements (corner height of 4.0 meters), a new tunnel construction was necessary between May 2015 and May 2022. The project volume was estimated at approximately 133.5 million euros. The new tunnel is about 2,700 meters (2.7 km) long and consists of two tubes, which run parallel to the existing railway tunnel at a distance of 30 to 50 meters.
The use of the Bözberg Tunnel is subject to the vignette requirement for vehicles up to 3.5 t GVW or the obligation to pay the heavy vehicle charge for vehicles over 3.5 t GVW. Therefore, the tunnel is subject to tolls, and appropriate authorization is required.
Unlike special toll tunnels such as the Great St. Bernard Tunnel or the Munt La Schera Tunnel, no additional fees are charged beyond the vignette or the paid heavy vehicle charge. The Bözberg Tunnel is not considered a special toll route.
