The border crossings between Slovenia and Hungary form important connection points between two countries where cross-border traffic takes place. This makes them particularly significant for both international trade and tourism.
Slovenia and Hungary share a border approximately 120 km long. Along this border there are several border crossings that significantly facilitate traffic between both countries.
The most important border crossings include in particular the following connections:
Border Crossing Dolga Vas – Letenye: connects the Slovenian town of Dolga Vas with the Hungarian town of Letenye and is located near the Slovenian-Hungarian motorway A4/E65.
Border Crossing Razkrižje – Hévíz: connects the Slovenian town of Razkrižje with the Hungarian town of Hévíz, which is particularly known for its thermal baths.
Border Crossing Gederovci – Rédics: connects important traffic axes between Slovenia and Hungary via the Slovenian town of Gederovci and the Hungarian town of Rédics, and is considered a significant crossing for international traffic.
Border Crossing Selo – Mursko Središće: connects the Slovenian village of Selo with the Hungarian town of Mursko Središće and is located on the road along the Mur river. Even though this crossing is less well known, it plays an important role for regional traffic and for the local population.
The following section provides an overview of whether you need a vignette in Slovenia and which toll road sections additionally need to be taken into account.
If you wish to use Slovenian motorways and expressways on your journey, vehicles under 3.5 t GVW require an electronic vignette, known as the E-Vinjeta. For vehicles with a higher permissible gross vehicle weight, the vignette requirement does not apply; instead, a distance-based toll is charged. In addition, there are special toll sections where further fees apply regardless of vehicle weight, for example when using the Karavanke Tunnel.
If your vehicle exceeds 3.5 t GVW, you will need a DarsGo transponder instead of a vignette for the collection of the distance-based toll. This is calculated based on the kilometres driven, the number of axles, and the Euro emission class, i.e. the level of pollutant emissions. The Euro emission classes are divided into pollution categories 1 to 6. Pollution category 1 represents a high level of pollutant emissions, while pollution category 6 represents a low level.
Even though the Karavanke Tunnel itself is not a vignette-required road section, it is accessed via roads that require a vignette. The tunnel connects Austria with Slovenia and is used primarily for crossing the border. So if you are travelling from Austria to Slovenia and wish to use the Karavanke Tunnel, you should take into account the additional fees for this special toll section and purchase a digital vignette for the access roads in good time.
The following section provides an overview of whether you need a vignette in Hungary and which toll roads additionally need to be taken into account.
In Hungary, a vignette requirement applies to cars, vehicle combinations, and motorhomes. The so-called e-Matrica is used, i.e. the Hungarian electronic vignette, where the toll is checked digitally via the licence plate. It is advisable to purchase the e-vignette online before starting your journey, as fines may be imposed for driving on toll roads without a valid e-vignette.
Different toll fees are charged depending on the vehicle category. For example, cars with more than 7 seats are classified at a higher rate than vehicles with fewer than 7 seats. Further information on the various vehicle categories can be found here:
DM1: Motorcycles (weekly and monthly vignette)
D1: Motorcycles (annual vignette), cars and motorhomes (vehicle class M1) up to 3.5 t GVW and up to 7 seats, also with trailer
D2: Commercial vehicles, cars and motorhomes up to 3.5 t GVW that do not fall into any other category
U: Trailers up to 3.5 t GVW for vehicles in class D2
Within the various vehicle categories you can choose between several validity periods. If you are unsure about the classification of your vehicle, you can find further information here.
A distance-based toll is payable in Hungary for vehicles with a permissible gross vehicle weight of over 3.5 t. This means that motorhomes, buses, and lorries have been required to pay a distance-based electronic toll since January 2024, which is recorded via the HU-GO system. In these cases, the distance-based toll replaces the vignette, so no additional vignette is required.
