The border crossings between Slovenia and Hungary serve as important connecting points between the two countries where cross-border traffic takes place. As a result, they are of particular importance for both international trade and tourism.
Slovenia and Hungary share a border of around 120 km. Along this border, there are several crossing points that significantly facilitate traffic between the two countries.
The most important border crossings include, in particular, the following connections:
Dolga Vas – Letenye border crossing: connects the Slovenian town of Dolga Vas with the Hungarian town of Letenye and is located near the Slovenian-Hungarian A4/E65 motorway.
Razkrižje – Hévíz border crossing: connects the Slovenian town of Razkrižje with the Hungarian town of Hévíz, which is particularly well known for its thermal baths.
Gederovci – Rédics border crossing: via the Slovenian town of Gederovci and the Hungarian town of Rédics, this crossing connects important transport routes between Slovenia and Hungary and is considered a significant crossing for international traffic.
Selo – Mursko Središće border crossing: connects the Slovenian village of Selo with the Hungarian town of Mursko Središće and is located on the road along the Mur River. Although this crossing is less well known, it plays an important role in regional traffic and for the local population.
The following section provides an overview of whether you need a vignette in Slovenia and which toll sections must additionally be taken into account.
If you wish to use Slovenian motorways and expressways during your journey, vehicles under 3.5 t GVW require an electronic vignette, the so-called E-Vinjeta. For vehicles with a higher permissible gross weight, the vignette requirement no longer applies; instead, a distance-based toll is charged. In addition, there are special toll sections where further fees apply regardless of vehicle weight, such as when using the Karawanks Tunnel.
If your vehicle weighs more than 3.5 t GVW, you will need a DarsGo transmitter instead of a vignette to pay the distance-based toll. This toll is based on the kilometres travelled, the number of axles, and the Euro emissions class, that is, the level of pollutant emissions. Euro emissions classes are divided into pollution classes 1 to 6. Pollution class 1 represents a high level of emissions, while pollution class 6 represents a low level of emissions.
Although the Karawanks Tunnel itself is not a vignette-required section, it is reached via roads that do require a vignette. The tunnel connects Austria and Slovenia and is mainly used to cross the border between the two countries. Therefore, if you are travelling from Austria to Slovenia and intend to use the Karawanks Tunnel, you should take the additional charges for this special toll section into account and obtain a digital vignette in good time for the access roads to the tunnel.
The following section provides an overview of whether you need a vignette in Hungary and which toll sections must additionally be taken into account.
In Hungary, a vignette is required for passenger cars, vehicle combinations, and motorhomes. The system used is the so-called e-Matrica, the Hungarian electronic vignette, in which the toll is checked digitally via the licence plate. It is advisable to purchase the e-vignette online before your journey, as fines may be imposed for driving on toll roads without a valid e-vignette.
Different toll rates apply depending on the vehicle class. For example, passenger cars with more than 7 seats are charged at a higher rate than vehicles with fewer than 7 seats. Further information on the different vehicle classes can be found here:
DM1: Motorcycles (weekly and monthly vignette)
D1: Motorcycles (annual vignette), passenger cars and motorhomes (vehicle class M1) up to 3.5 t GVW and up to 7 seats, also with trailer
D2: Commercial vehicles, passenger cars, and motorhomes up to 3.5 t GVW that do not fall into any other category
U: Trailers up to 3.5 t GVW for vehicles in class D2
Within the different vehicle classes, you can choose between several validity periods. If you are unsure about the classification of your vehicle, you can find further information here.
A distance-based toll must be paid in Hungary for vehicles with a permissible gross vehicle weight of more than 3.5 t. This means that motorhomes, buses, and lorries have been required since January 2024 to pay a route-based electronic toll recorded via the HU-GO system. In these cases, the distance-based toll replaces the vignette, so no additional vignette is required.
