Bulgaria: Joint repair works on the Maritsa motorway before the border with Turkey (September 2026)
On the Bulgarian motorway Maritsa (A4), joint repair works have been underway since 16 September 2026 on two structures shortly before the border crossing Kapitan Andreevo to Turkey. Affected is the section between kilometre 109 and 110 in Haskovo Province, in the direction of the border.
Specifically, the joints of an overpass at kilometre 109 as well as a bridge over the Kalamitsa River at kilometre 110 are being renewed. The works are being carried out by the company Infra Expert AD on behalf of the Bulgarian Road Infrastructure Agency (API). The construction site has no impact on the vignette prices for Bulgaria, which already rose in August 2026.
How is traffic being managed?
The driving and overtaking lanes towards Kapitan Andreevo are being closed step by step, with traffic running via the remaining open lane in each case. A speed limit of 50 km/h applies on the affected section. Drivers should expect increased attention and a bit more time for the last few kilometres before the border.
When is completion of the works expected?
No fixed end date has been announced. The executing authority speaks of completion within the current 2026 construction season, meaning presumably by later autumn. Once the works towards the border are finished, the joints on the opposite carriageway towards Haskovo are to be renewed next – meaning a similar construction site can be expected in the opposite direction.
Why is this section so important?
The Maritsa motorway is part of the European long-distance road E80 and the central link between the Bulgarian Trakia motorway and the Kapitan Andreevo–Kapıkule border crossing, one of the largest and busiest border crossings in Europe towards Turkey. Anyone travelling from Central Europe via Romania further towards Istanbul usually uses this section as the last stretch before the border. For Bulgaria itself, the regular vignette requirement applies along the entire route.
