The border crossings between Slovenia and Hungary form important connecting points between two countries where cross-border traffic takes place. This gives them particular significance for both international trade and tourism. Slovenia and Hungary share a border of around 120 km in length. Several border crossings are located along this border, significantly facilitating traffic between the two countries.
Well-known border crossings between Hungary and Slovenia
The most important border crossings include, in particular, the following connections:
Dolga Vas – Letenye border crossing: connects the Slovenian town of Dolga Vas with the Hungarian town of Letenye and is located near the Slovenian-Hungarian motorway A4/E65.
Razkrižje – Hévíz border crossing: connects the Slovenian town of Razkrižje with the Hungarian town of Hévíz, which is particularly known for its thermal baths.
Gederovci – Rédics border crossing: connects important traffic routes between Slovenia and Hungary via the Slovenian town of Gederovci and the Hungarian town of Rédics, and is considered a significant crossing for international traffic.
Selo – Mursko Središće border crossing: connects the Slovenian village of Selo with the Hungarian town of Mursko Središće and is located on the road along the Mur river. Although this crossing is less well known, it plays an important role for regional traffic and the local population.

Vignette requirement (or not?)
If you want to use Slovenian motorways and expressways on your trip, vehicles under 3.5 t gross vehicle weight require an electronic vignette, the so-called e-Vinjeta. For vehicles with a higher permissible total weight, the vignette requirement does not apply; instead, a distance-based toll is charged. In addition, there are special toll routes where further fees apply regardless of the vehicle's weight, such as when using the Karawanks Tunnel.
Distance-based toll
If your vehicle is over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight, you need a DarsGo transmitter device instead of the vignette to collect the distance-based toll. This is calculated based on the kilometres driven, the number of axles, and the Euro emission class, i.e. the level of pollutant emissions. The Euro emission classes are divided into pollutant classes 1 to 6. Pollutant class 1 represents high emissions, while pollutant class 6 represents low emissions.
Special feature of the Karawanks Tunnel (special toll route)
Even though the Karawanks Tunnel itself is not a vignette-liable section, it is reached via vignette-liable roads. The tunnel connects Austria with Slovenia and is mainly used for crossing the border. So if you are travelling from Austria to Slovenia and want to use the Karawanks Tunnel, you should take into account the additional fees for this special toll route and purchase a digital vignette for the access roads in good time.
Hungary

Vignette requirement (or not?)
In Hungary, a vignette requirement applies to cars, vehicles with trailers, and motorhomes. The so-called e-Matrica is used, i.e. the Hungarian electronic vignette, whereby the toll is controlled digitally via the licence plate. It is advisable to purchase the e-vignette online before starting your trip, as fines are threatened if you drive on toll routes without a valid e-vignette.
Depending on the vehicle class, different toll fees apply. For example, cars with more than 7 seats are classified higher than vehicles with fewer than 7 seats. You can find more information on the various vehicle classes here:
DM1: motorcycles (weekly and monthly vignette)
D1: motorcycles (annual vignette), cars and motorhomes (vehicle class M1) up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight and up to 7 seats, also with trailer
D2: commercial vehicles, cars and motorhomes up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight that do not fall into any other category
U: trailers up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight for vehicles of class D2

Distance-based toll
A distance-based toll must be paid in Hungary for vehicles with a permissible total weight of over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight. This means that motorhomes, buses, and trucks have had to pay a distance-based electronic toll since January 2024, which is recorded via the HU-GO system. In these cases, the distance-based toll replaces the vignette, so no additional vignette is required.
