Why do you have to pay toll fees?

Most countries in Europe charge toll fees. There is what is known as a toll obligation. But what does that mean? Tolls are charged for the use of many motorways and expressways as well as tunnels and bridges. The money generated through tolls is invested, for example, in the road network. This ensures a smooth journey on your way to your holiday destination. The primary areas for investment are infrastructure, traffic management and road safety, as well as environmental protection measures.

• Infrastructure: construction and maintenance of roads and motorways

• Road safety and traffic management: new technologies such as intelligent transport systems or toll gantries

• Environmental protection: expansion of noise barriers or measures to reduce emissions

How is the toll collected?

In general, tolls can be collected in various forms. These include the vignette requirement, the distance-based/route-dependent toll, and the special toll.

In Bosnia and Herzegovina, there is a toll obligation in the form of a distance-based toll. Depending on the vehicle class, the amount of toll to be paid at the toll station may vary. Unlike other countries (such as Austria or Switzerland), there is no vignette requirement in Bosnia and Herzegovina. There are also no special toll routes.

The route-based toll in Bosnia and Herzegovina applies only to certain motorways. The toll-liable routes include:

• Toll obligation on the A1: several sections of the A1 motorway near Sarajevo, south of Mostar, and at the northern border with Croatia near Modriča (Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina) are subject to a route-based toll

• Toll obligation on the E661: The section of the E661 between Banja Luka and Gradiška is subject to a distance-based toll.

• Motorway "Autoput 9. Januar": A route-based toll obligation applies on this motorway from Banja Luka to Doboj (Republika Srpska)

Regulations and vehicle classes

Regulations

In Bosnia and Herzegovina (Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina & Republika Srpska), specific regulations apply to motor vehicles and their classification into vehicle classes:

• Cars: For cars, the toll amount varies depending on the height at the front axle (up to 1.3 m/ from 1.3 m).

• Combinations (vehicle with trailer): The front axle also plays an important role for combinations. Combinations are tolled at different rates depending on the height at the front axle of the towing vehicle, the number of axles, and in some cases (applies to the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina) the weight.

• Motorhome: Motorhomes are also tolled at different rates based on the height at the front axle, the number of axles, and in some cases (applies to the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina) the weight.

Vehicle classes

Based on the regulations, it has already become clear that the rules for tolls in Bosnia and Herzegovina differ depending on the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Republika Srpska. Therefore, the vehicle classes of the Federation and the Republika also differ.

Below you will find an overview of the vehicle classes of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina:

• Klasa I: Motorcycles and motor vehicles (two axles) with a gross vehicle weight (GVW) under 3.5 t and a height under 1.3 m at the front axle.

• Klasa II: Motor vehicles and combinations (two or three axles) under 3.5 t GVW and a height over 1.3 m at the front axle.

• Klasa III: Motor vehicles and combinations (two or three axles) over 3.5 t GVW and a height over 1.3 m at the front axle.

• Klasa IV: Motor vehicles and combinations (more than three axles) over 3.5 t GVW and a height over 1.3 m at the front axle.

Below you will find an overview of the vehicle classes of the Republika Srpska:

• Klasa IA: Motorcycles

• Klasa I: Motor vehicles (two axles) with a height under 1.3 m at the front axle.

• Klasa II: Motor vehicles and combinations (three axles) with a height under 1.3 m at the front axle.

• Klasa III: Motor vehicles and combinations (two or three axles) with a height over 1.3 m at the front axle.

• Klasa IV: Motor vehicles and combinations (more than three axles) with a height over 1.3 m at the front axle.

Paying the toll fees

Payment of the route-based toll takes place at the toll stations, and here is how it works: When you enter a toll route, you take a ticket at the toll station. When you leave the route, you pay for this ticket at the toll station. The lanes at the toll stations are marked according to the available payment methods. In principle, you can pay in cash (euros or convertible marks, abbreviated: BAM) or with credit cards as well as debit cards (Maestro). However, please note that if you pay in euros, you will receive your change in the local currency (BAM).

Electronic payment is possible in the part of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina on the A1. For electronic payment, you need a transmitter device "Autoceste Card" (ACC), which is linked to a prepaid system. Electronic payment is also possible in parts of Republika Srpska (on the motorways around Banja Luka). For this, you need the ENP transmitter device, which enables electronic billing. This transmitter device is available at the toll stations Čatrnja, Jakupovci, Prnjavor, Kostajnica and Kladari.
