Romania: Rovinieta from October 1, 2026 tiered by Euro emissions standard, bridge toll abolished
From 1 October 2026, a new Rovinieta tariff will apply in Romania for cars and motorhomes with a permitted total weight of up to 3.5 tonnes, which for the first time will be based on the vehicle's Euro emissions standard. At the same time, the previous bridge toll charges at the two Danube crossings Fetești and Vadu Oii will be abolished on this date.
Only as of 1 September 2026, the basic rate of the annual Rovinieta for cars was raised from 28 to 50 euros. With the new tiered structure from 1 October, the vignette will now also be differentiated by emissions class: vehicles with lower emissions will in future pay less than older diesel or petrol models.
Overview of the new Rovinieta tariffs for cars
For vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes, the following annual rates will apply from 1 October 2026 according to several Romanian media reports, each in addition to daily and monthly options:
Euro 6 and electric vehicles: 254 lei per year (around 50 euros), 48 lei per month, 22 lei per day
Euro 4 and Euro 5: 292 lei per year (around 58 euros), 55 lei per month, 26 lei per day
Euro 3 or older: 330 lei per year (around 65 euros), 62 lei per month, 29 lei per day
Bridge toll on the Danube is abolished
Until now, travellers had to pay a separate bridge toll in addition to the Rovinieta at the two important Danube crossings Fetești and Vadu Oii on the route towards the Black Sea. This fee will be abolished without replacement from 1 October 2026 – an advantage especially for travellers heading to the Romanian coast.
New system mainly affects trucks and buses
For trucks and buses over 3.5 tonnes, the previous time-based Rovinieta will be replaced on the same date by the new, distance-based toll system TollRo – part of Romania's reform commitments under the EU recovery plan PNRR. From 15 January 2027, connection to the European interoperability system SETRE is also planned. For cars and motorhomes up to 3.5 tonnes, however, the classic Rovinieta remains in place.
Rovinieta vignettes already purchased and still valid are unaffected by the technical system change and do not need to be repurchased.
Maut in Rumänien auf einen Blick
Für alle Fahrzeuge außer Motorrädern gilt auf dem rumänischen Nationalstraßennetz die digitale Vignettenpflicht (Rovinieta) – ein Pauschalbetrag für einen festen Zeitraum, unabhängig vom Fahrzeuggewicht. Motorräder sind vollständig von der Mautpflicht befreit.
Eine streckenbezogene Kilometer-Maut existiert in Rumänien selbst nicht. Zusätzlich fällt bei Donau-Überquerungen (z. B. an der Grenzbrücke Giurgiu– Ruse) eine gesonderte Sondermaut an, unabhängig von der Rovinieta.
