Romania: Rovinieta from October 1, 2026 tiered by Euro emissions standard, bridge toll abolished
From 1 October 2026, a new rovinieta rate will apply in Romania for cars and motorhomes (Category A, up to 8 + 1 seats), based for the first time on the vehicle's Euro emission standard. At the same time, the existing bridge toll fees at the two Danube crossings Fetești and Vadu Oii will be abolished on that day.
From September 2025 to the end of September 2026, the annual rovinieta for cars cost 50 euros (previously 28 euros). With the new tiered structure from 1 October, the vignette will now also be differentiated by emissions class: lower-emission vehicles will pay less than older diesel or petrol models.
Overview of the new rovinieta rates for cars
According to Ordinul MTI 888/2026 (Monitorul Oficial No. 818 of 25.09.2026), the following rates (including VAT) will apply for cars (Category A) from 1 October 2026:
Electric vehicles: 228 Lei per year (approx. €43), 43 Lei for 30 days, 27 Lei for 10 days, 20 Lei per day
Euro 6: 254 Lei per year (approx. €48), 48 Lei for 30 days, 30 Lei for 10 days, 22 Lei per day
Euro 4 and Euro 5: 292 Lei per year (approx. €55), 55 Lei for 30 days, 35 Lei for 10 days, 26 Lei per day
Euro 3 or older: 330 Lei per year (approx. €63), 62 Lei for 30 days, 39 Lei for 10 days, 29 Lei per day
Bridge toll on the Danube to be abolished
Until now, travellers at the two important Danube crossings of Fetești and Vadu Oii, on the route towards the Black Sea, had to pay a separate bridge toll in addition to the rovinieta. This fee will be abolished without replacement from 1 October 2026 – an advantage especially for travellers heading to the Romanian coast.
New system mainly affects trucks
For trucks (goods vehicles) over 3.5 tonnes, the previous time-based rovinieta will be replaced on the same date by the new, distance-based toll system TollRo – part of Romania's reform commitments under the EU recovery plan PNRR. From 15 January 2027, the system is also set to be linked to the European interoperability system SETRE. For cars, motorhomes, as well as buses and other passenger transport vehicles, the classic rovinieta will continue to apply.
Rovinieta vignettes already purchased and still valid will remain unaffected by the technical system changeover and do not need to be repurchased.
Romania toll at a glance
For cars, motorhomes, buses and goods vehicles up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight, the digital vignette requirement (Rovinieta) applies on the Romanian national road network, a flat amount for a fixed period. The price depends on the category and Euro class. Motorcycles are completely exempt from the toll requirement.
Since 1 October 2026, goods vehicles over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight pay the distance-based toll TollRo according to kilometres driven instead of the Rovinieta. In addition to the Rovinieta, a special toll now only applies at the Calafat-Vidin Danube Bridge; at the Ruse-Giurgiu Bridge, Bulgaria collects a toll in the direction of Romania.
