Romania: A1 between Cisnădie and Boița closed from October 5 to December 19, 2026
The Romanian motorway A1 between the Cisnădie and Boița junctions near Sibiu (Hermannstadt) will be completely closed from October 5 to December 19, 2026. This was officially announced by the state road administration CNAIR on October 2, 2026. The closure will therefore last around two and a half months and affects cars as well as heavy goods traffic.
The background is the construction of an overpass at the Boița junction, which will in future connect the A1 with the national road DN7. It is being built as part of the Sibiu–Pitești motorway section (Lot 2), which is being constructed by the Turkish consortium Mapa-Cengiz. Because the bridge is being built in sections using a movable formwork system, CNAIR states that a complete suspension of traffic beneath it is necessary for safety reasons.
Diversion via DN7 and DN1
Traffic will be diverted onto country roads: between Boița, Tălmaciu and Veștem via the DN7 and between Veștem and Cisnădie via the DN1. Anyone traveling from Transylvania southward or returning must therefore expect longer journey times for more than ten weeks. Be sure to allow extra time, especially during peak hours and weekend travel periods. Our overview of the road system in Romania explains what types of roads exist in Romania and how they differ.
The Rovinieta also applies on the diversion route
The Rovinieta, the Romanian vignette, applies not only on motorways but across the entire national road network, including the DN1 and the DN7. Anyone using the diversion route therefore still needs a valid Rovinieta. Since October 1, 2026, it has been sold exclusively via the new platform TollRo — you can read more about this in our article on the new TollRo purchasing platform.
There are currently restrictions elsewhere on the A1 as well: asphalt works between Arad and Pecica will continue until mid-October, as we reported in our article on the roadworks on the A1 near Arad.
Romania toll at a glance
For all vehicles except motorcycles, the digital vignette requirement (Rovinieta) applies on the Romanian national road network. It is a flat fee for a fixed period, regardless of vehicle weight. Motorcycles are fully exempt from the toll requirement.
Romania itself has no distance-based kilometre toll. In addition, Danube crossings (e.g. at the Giurgiu-Ruse border bridge) charge a separate special toll, regardless of the Rovinieta.
