Romania: From October 1, 2026, Rovinieta and TollRo must only be paid via official channels - bank transfers to CNAIR are invalid
As of October 1, 2026, the following applies in Romania: The Rovinieta and the TollRo tariff may only be paid through the official channels of the new electronic toll system. On September 30, the state road administration CNAIR explicitly warned against simply transferring the amount to a CNAIR account.
Direct transfers to CNAIR's revenue accounts, for example using payment references such as "plată toll" or "tarif TollRo," are not registered by the system as payment. They do not establish any right to travel on the Romanian national road network — anyone relying on this risks objections during inspections.
These payment methods are valid
According to CNAIR, valid payment methods are the online portal etoll.ro, the mobile app TollRo for iOS and Android, CNAIR sales points, border crossings, and authorized distribution partners. Anyone who has already mistakenly transferred money can, according to CNAIR, reclaim the amount by email with proof of payment and IBAN.
Already purchased Rovinieta remains valid
Rovinietas issued through the previous SIEGMCR platform up to and including September 30, 2026, remain valid until the date stated on them. A new Rovinieta is not required, and inspections will continue to be carried out automatically via license plate recognition. You can read everything about the platform switch in our article on the new TollRo purchasing platform, and we explain the new price tiers based on the Euro emissions standard in the article Rovinieta from October 1, 2026.
Practical tip for your trip
Purchase the Rovinieta before entering the country exclusively through an official or authorized provider, and after purchase, check that the license plate and validity period are correctly recorded. A bank transfer without matching in the system does not replace the purchase.
Romania toll at a glance
For all vehicles except motorcycles, the digital vignette requirement (Rovinieta) applies on the Romanian national road network. It is a flat fee for a fixed period, regardless of vehicle weight. Motorcycles are fully exempt from the toll requirement.
Romania itself has no distance-based kilometre toll. In addition, Danube crossings (e.g. at the Giurgiu-Ruse border bridge) charge a separate special toll, regardless of the Rovinieta.
