Closure of the A13: Consequences for the Gotthard

Restrictions on important travel routes heading south

Travelers by car should prepare for another traffic-heavy weekend around the Gotthard at the end of May. The reason is a planned demonstration in Austria, which will temporarily lead to a complete closure of the important Brenner Motorway (A13). The closure affects May 30 from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Further information on this closure can be found in our news article on the full closure of the Brenner Motorway.

More traffic expected on the Gotthard route

Due to the closure, many travelers are likely to switch to alternative routes, particularly the Gotthard Tunnel and the San Bernardino route in Switzerland. Traffic experts therefore expect increased traffic volume and longer waiting times around the Gotthard Tunnel. It is therefore recommended to start your journey as early as possible in the morning or not until the evening.

Gotthard Pass road as an additional alternative

Right on time for the expected travel traffic, the Gotthard Pass road is also reopening to traffic. Due to the low-snow winter, the pass road can be opened earlier than usual, offering an additional alternative to the tunnel. Nevertheless, increased traffic volume is expected on the most important Alpine routes around Pentecost and Corpus Christi.

Note the tolls in Austria and Switzerland

Toll in Austria

Anyone switching to Austrian motorways for their journey needs a valid vignette or must pay a route-based toll. On certain routes, including the Brenner Motorway, an additional special toll applies. Further information on the toll in Austria and the Brenner Motorway as a special toll route can be found in our guide.

Toll in Switzerland

In Switzerland, too, a valid vignette is required to use the motorways. In addition to the vignette requirement for vehicles up to 3.5 t gross weight, there is also the heavy vehicle charge (HVF and PSVA) for vehicles over 3.5 t gross weight. You must also be aware of special toll routes in Switzerland. Detailed information on the toll in Switzerland and the special toll routes can also be found in our guide.
