What is the San Bernardino Tunnel?

San Bernardino Tunnel

The San Bernardino Pass, through which the San Bernardino Tunnel runs among other routes, is located in the south of Switzerland in the canton of Graubünden. The road tunnel has a summit elevation of around 2,066 meters above sea level and lies near the Italian border on Main Road 13. The tunnel also runs parallel to the Laghetto Moesola. It connects the regions of Hinterrhein and San Bernardino and has a total length of 6,600 meters (6.6 km). The tunnel is paved, suitable for caravans, and has served as an important connection since 1967 between the southern Graubünden valleys of Misox and Calancatal and the cantonal capital of Chur.

Is the San Bernardino Tunnel subject to tolls?

Use of the San Bernardino Tunnel is subject to the vignette requirement for vehicles up to 3.5 t gross weight or the obligation to pay the heavy vehicle charge for vehicles over 3.5 t gross weight. The tunnel is therefore subject to tolls, and a corresponding authorization is required.

In contrast to tunnels subject to special tolls such as the Great St. Bernard Tunnel or the Munt-la-Schera Tunnel, however, no additional fees apply beyond the vignette or the paid heavy vehicle charge. The San Bernardino Tunnel is not among the special toll routes.
