How is the toll collected in Austria?
In Austria, tolls are collected differently depending on the vehicle:
- Vehicles up to 3.5 t tzGm (cars, motorcycles, light motorhomes): the vignette requirement applies on the motorways (A) and expressways (S). Three short border sections are exempt: the A 1 from the border at Walserberg to Salzburg Nord, the A 12 from the border near Kufstein to Kufstein-Süd and the A 14 from the border near Hörbranz to Hohenems. The S 5 is vignette-free between the Jettsdorf interchange and Krems Mitte. On the route toll sections (individual sections of the A 9, A 10, A 11 and S 16 as well as the A 13), you pay the route toll instead of the vignette. You still need a vignette for the approach via other motorways and expressways.
- Vehicles over 3.5 t tzGm (trucks, buses, heavy motorhomes): instead of the vignette, the kilometer-based distance-based toll (GO toll) via the GO-Box applies on the motorways and expressways.
- Federal roads: they are not part of the toll network; neither the vignette nor the GO toll applies here. Exceptions are individual tunnels and mountain pass roads with a route toll (special toll).

- Toll-free federal roads

The motorway toll in Austria applies on toll roads, i.e. on toll motorways and expressways as well as on toll tunnels and mountain pass roads. It is collected in three ways: through the vignette requirement, the distance-based toll and the special toll. In Austria, the special toll is called the route toll (not to be confused with the distance-based toll). The following table shows which toll charges apply to your vehicle. You can find all tunnels and mountain pass roads with a route toll in our guide to the route toll (special toll).
| Vehicle | Vignette | Distance-based toll | Special toll / route toll |
|---|---|---|---|
| Motorcycle | Required | Not required | May apply |
| Car (up to 3.5 t tzGm) | Required | Not required | May apply |
| Car (over 3.5 t tzGm) | Not required | Required | May apply |
| Motorhome (up to 3.5 t tzGm) | Required | Not required | May apply |
| Motorhome (over 3.5 t tzGm) | Not required | Required | May apply |
| Truck (up to 3.5 t tzGm) | Required | Not required | May apply |
| Truck (over 3.5 t tzGm) | Not required | Required | May apply |
Who needs a digital vignette in Austria?
In Austria, all vehicles up to 3.5 t tzGm need a vignette, including motorcycles. Under the vignette requirement, motorway charges are not calculated according to the kilometers driven but as a flat fee that varies depending on the length of your trip. The price of a vignette may differ depending on the vehicle class.
With the Vignette Flat Rate, you receive your digital vignette for Austria and can use all motorways and expressways that require a vignette. The route toll on special toll routes such as Brenner, Arlberg or Tauern is not included in the base price, but you can add it with the Austria route toll add-on. In Austria, the vignette requirement applies to vehicles up to 3.5 t tzGm (the technically permissible gross weight set by the manufacturer, field F.1 of the registration certificate Part I). Transitional rule: vehicles over 3.5 t tzGm that were first registered before 1 December 2023 and whose maximum permissible gross weight had already been set at no more than 3.5 t before that cut-off date remain subject to the vignette requirement until 31 January 2029, as long as this setting remains in place. This mainly affects downrated motorhomes. You can find more detailed information on the various vehicle classes and the corresponding rules in our guide.
Good to know: The 2026 sticker vignette is the last one and is valid until 31 January 2027. From 2027, only the digital vignette will be available in Austria.
How much does the vignette cost?
The car toll in Austria is a vignette requirement: instead of a charge per kilometer driven, you pay a flat fee that depends on the duration and the vehicle. The table shows the official single prices for the toll in Austria 2026: for cars and motorhomes up to 3.5 t tzGm and for motorcycles (vignette year 2026, incl. VAT), from the 1-day to the annual price.
| Vignette duration | Car / motorhome (up to 3.5 t tzGm) | Motorcycle |
|---|---|---|
| 1-day vignette | 9.60 € | 3.80 € |
| 10-day vignette | 12.80 € | 5.10 € |
| 2-month vignette | 32.00 € | 12.80 € |
| Annual vignette | 106.80 € | 42.70 € |
The price highlighted in green is that of the vignette to which the Vignette Flat Rate applies.
Validity of the vignettes: The 1-day vignette is valid on the selected validity date from 00:00 to 23:59. The 10-day vignette is valid for 10 calendar days from the start of validity (start plus 9 additional days), the 2-month vignette for two months from the first day of validity (e.g. March 15 to May 15). The annual vignette is valid from December 1, 2025 to January 31, 2027. Under the ASFINAG toll regulations, 2-month and annual vignettes purchased online are valid for consumers at the earliest from the 18th day after purchase. This deadline does not apply to the 1-day and 10-day vignettes; they are valid from the selected validity date.
Depending on the vehicle, the motorway toll in Austria includes the vignette, the distance-based toll with the GO-Box and, where applicable, the route toll for individual tunnels and mountain pass roads. For cars, motorway charges are paid as a flat fee via the vignette. Depending on your destination and how often you travel, these single prices add up quickly, especially if you travel to several countries each year.
If you travel to different countries several times a year, you pay these amounts again every time. With the Vignette Flat Rate, that is no longer necessary: for each trip, you activate the 10-day vignette for cars, and we cover the toll for it. The ASFINAG route toll for individual tunnels and motorway sections (such as Brenner, Arlberg or Tauern) is not included in the base price, but you can add it with the Austria route toll add-on. Private mountain pass roads such as the Grossglockner High Alpine Road are not included. With the same flat rate, you can also activate vignettes for 7 other countries. You only pay the monthly flat rate price. Book the Vignette Flat Rate now and travel with ease.
If there is no vignette on toll roads, a replacement toll of EUR 200 (motorcycle: EUR 100) becomes due. If it is not paid, administrative penalty proceedings with fines of EUR 300 to EUR 3,000 may follow. Find out more under Penalties and consequences in Austria.
Is there a distance-based toll in Austria?
Yes, for vehicles over 3.5 t tzGm (trucks, buses, larger motorhomes). Unlike the vignette requirement, this is not a flat fee; instead, the toll depends on the kilometers driven, the vehicle class (number of axles) and the emission class. Accordingly, the amount of the toll can vary considerably. The distance-based toll is collected via a transponder (on-board unit), which you must purchase for the specific country at points of sale and install in your vehicle. Payment is then made automatically, either afterwards via the stored payment method (post-pay) or from credit topped up in advance (pre-pay).
In Austria, the so-called GO-Box is required for this. Vehicles subject to the distance-based toll (over 3.5 t tzGm) are exempt from the vignette requirement.
What is the special toll (route toll) in Austria?
The special toll is an additional charge for certain toll tunnels and mountain pass roads. In Austria, it is called the route toll (Note: not to be confused with the distance-based toll). When you use a special toll route, the charge applies in addition. On the ASFINAG sections, vehicles up to 3.5 t tzGm pay a fixed amount per trip, which depends on the respective section. On private toll roads, the amount may differ depending on the vehicle.
The toll tunnels and roads with a route toll include the Brenner Motorway (A13) and the Arlberg, Felbertauern, Tauern and Karawanken tunnels. The Felbertauern Road (B 108) is privately operated, and different rules may apply there.
The route toll is charged for clearly defined sections. On the ASFINAG route toll sections, vehicles up to 3.5 t tzGm do not need a vignette but pay the route toll there instead. Vehicles over 3.5 t tzGm pay the GO toll via the GO-Box on these sections as well. What this means for you: even if you have purchased a vignette for the motorways, there are certain sections for which an additional charge (special toll) applies.
With vehicles up to 3.5 t tzGm, you pay the route toll on a special toll route, for example in advance with a route toll ticket. For vehicles over 3.5 t tzGm, the amount on the ASFINAG route toll sections is billed automatically via the GO-Box; payment at the toll station is not possible for these vehicles. What used to be called video tolling is now called the Digital Route Toll: if you buy a digital route toll ticket in advance, you are identified at the ASFINAG toll stations by license plate recognition and drive through the green-marked lane without stopping. Without a digital ticket, you pay at the toll booth with vehicles up to 3.5 t tzGm or use the Digitale Streckenmaut FLEX: after registering in advance, you pay automatically after each passage.
As many special toll routes can be reached via access roads subject to the vignette requirement or the distance-based toll, it is advisable in any case to also purchase a vignette or a transponder. You can find more information on the individual special toll routes in Austria in our guide.

All the important answers about toll charges, the vignette, the GO-Box and the route toll in Austria.
How does the toll system work in Austria?
The toll system in Austria depends on the vehicle. For vehicles up to 3.5 t tzGm, the vignette applies on motorways and expressways, a flat fee for a fixed period. For vehicles over 3.5 t tzGm, the distance-based toll is billed instead via the GO-Box according to the kilometers driven. In addition, the route toll (special toll) applies on certain tunnels and mountain pass roads. All these road charges are sorted by vehicle in the table above.
How do you pay the toll in Austria?
You can conveniently buy the vignette online, for example from us as a digital vignette for Austria. It is linked to your license plate. The distance-based toll for vehicles over 3.5 t tzGm is billed automatically via the GO-Box and the stored payment method. With vehicles up to 3.5 t tzGm, you pay the route toll in advance as a digital route toll ticket, via the Digitale Streckenmaut FLEX (after registering in advance, automatically after each passage) or directly at the toll booth of the route. For vehicles over 3.5 t tzGm, it is billed automatically via the GO-Box on the ASFINAG route toll sections; payment at the toll station is not possible for these vehicles. The map above shows where which toll applies.
Do you need a vignette in Austria?
Yes, but not everywhere. If you drive a car, motorcycle or motorhome up to 3.5 t tzGm on motorways and expressways, you must buy a vignette in Austria. No vignette is required on federal and country roads. There is also no vignette requirement on three short border sections (A 1 from the border at Walserberg to Salzburg Nord, A 12 from the border near Kufstein to Kufstein-Süd, A 14 from the border near Hörbranz to Hohenems) and on the S 5 between the Jettsdorf interchange and Krems Mitte. On the route toll sections (individual sections of the A 9, A 10, A 11 and S 16 as well as the A 13), you pay the route toll instead of the vignette. Driving on toll motorways and expressways without a valid vignette incurs a replacement toll of EUR 200 (motorcycle: EUR 100). If it is not paid, administrative penalty proceedings with fines of EUR 300 to EUR 3,000 may follow. Find out more under Penalties and consequences in Austria.

Who needs a GO-Box instead of a vignette?
Vehicles with a technically permissible gross weight (tzGm) over 3.5 t (trucks, buses, larger motorhomes) need a GO-Box for the distance-based toll. These vehicles are exempt from the vignette requirement. Our guide explains which vehicle class applies to your vehicle.
What is the difference between the vignette, the distance-based toll and the special toll (route toll)?
The vignette is a flat fee for a specific period and applies to vehicles up to 3.5 t tzGm. The distance-based toll is billed via the GO-Box according to the kilometers driven and applies to vehicles over 3.5 t tzGm. The special toll, called the route toll in Austria, is charged in addition on certain tunnels and mountain pass roads.
Which routes in Austria are subject to the special toll (route toll)?
Special toll routes are usually toll tunnels and mountain pass roads, for the use of which a separate fee is charged. These include, among others, the Brenner motorway (A13) as well as the Arlberg, Felbertauern, Tauern, and Karawanken tunnels. On the ASFINAG route toll sections (A9, A10, A11, A13, S16), vehicles up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight pay the route toll instead of the vignette; for the approach route you still need the vignette. The Felbertauern road (B108) is privately operated, where different rules may apply. You can find all routes in the guide to route tolls (special tolls) in Austria.
Do I need a vignette on the E 60 or E 55 through Austria?
The E 60 and E 55 are European routes, i.e. numbers for long-distance routes, and not a separate type of toll. In Austria, they mostly run on motorways and expressways: the E 60 via the A 14, S 16 (Arlberg), A 12 (Inn Valley), A 1 (West) and A 4 (East), among others, and the E 55 via the S 10, A 7, A 1, A 10 and A 2, among others. There, the vignette requirement applies to vehicles up to 3.5 t tzGm. On some sections, a route toll is also charged, for example in the Arlberg Tunnel on the E 60 or in the Tauern and Katschberg tunnels on the E 55. The map and our guide to the route toll show which sections these are.

Exception under the ASFINAG toll regulations (Mautordnung): for consumers, 2-month and annual vignettes bought online are valid at the earliest from the 18th day after purchase.
What is the route toll in Austria?
In Austria, the special toll is called route toll. It applies to clearly defined sections, for example on certain tunnels and mountain pass roads, and replaces the vignette on ASFINAG sections for vehicles up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight. It should not be confused with the distance-based toll, which is charged for vehicles over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight based on kilometres driven via the GO-Box. You can find all the details in the guide to the route toll.
What is video tolling in Austria?
The former name video tolling refers to what is now the Digital Route Toll. If you buy a digital route toll ticket in advance, you are identified at the ASFINAG toll stations by license plate recognition and can drive through the green-marked lane without stopping. Without a digital ticket, you pay at the toll booth with vehicles up to 3.5 t tzGm or use the Digitale Streckenmaut FLEX: after registering in advance, you pay automatically after each passage. You can find all routes and ticket types in our guide to the route toll.
