Landeck Tunnel

What is the Landeck Tunnel?

The Landeck Tunnel in Austria is located in Tyrol, west of Innsbruck and east of St. Anton am Arlberg. Access is via federal road B 180. It is a single-tube motorway tunnel on the A 12, connecting the Upper Inn Valley via the Reschen Pass with South Tyrol. The Landeck Tunnel is also referred to as the Landeck South bypass or Landeck southern bypass, as it serves to reduce traffic volume in the municipalities of Landeck and Zams in the Tyrolean Oberland. The tunnel connects the Reschen Road (B 180) with the Inn Valley Motorway A 12. Unlike some other tunnels, the Landeck Tunnel does not charge a separate route toll (special toll), as it is not classified as a special toll route. However, as part of the A 12, the tunnel is subject to a vignette requirement. Unlike many other tunnels in Austria, the Landeck Tunnel has only one tube with two lanes: one lane is used for traffic from north to south, and the other for traffic in the opposite direction.

Alternative Route

The Landeck Tunnel can be bypassed. Below is an alternative route that can be particularly advantageous in case of traffic jams. To do so, drive through Landeck via the L 76. A pleasant side effect of this route is that it runs directly along the Inn river. Bypassing the Landeck Tunnel this way takes approximately 20 minutes (around 10 km). Driving directly through the Landeck Tunnel, on the other hand, takes about 10 minutes (also around 10 km).

Whether bypassing the Landeck Tunnel is actually worthwhile in any given case depends in particular on the direction from which you are approaching the tunnel.
