Villach Alpine Road

The Villach Alpine Road is one of the most impressive panoramic roads in Carinthia and leads directly into the Dobratsch Nature Park. Over a distance of around 16.5 kilometres, you'll experience a varied drive through the alpine mountain landscape with numerous viewpoints, hairpin bends and opportunities for stops along the way. Unlike classic traffic connections, the focus here is not on quick travel, but on the nature experience itself.

The road is popular with both tourists and locals and is suitable for various types of vehicles. These include cars, motorcycles, motorhomes and buses. Along the route, you'll find various parking options, hiking trails and viewpoints, making the Villach Alpine Road a versatile excursion destination.

Opening hours of the Villach Alpine Road

Villach Alpine Road

Unlike many other alpine roads, the Villach Alpine Road is open all year round. However, different regulations apply depending on the season, which you should take into account when planning your trip.

During the winter season, which usually lasts from mid-November to mid-April, the road is generally passable and even toll-free. During this period, the city of Villach takes over the maintenance of the route. Please note, however, that no current online information on the road's passability is available during this time. Weather conditions may therefore affect actual usability.

During the summer season from around mid-April to mid-November, the Villach Alpine Road is regularly open and subject to a toll. During this period, access is via the toll booth, where the corresponding special toll must be paid.

In addition, time restrictions apply to the use of the road. For motorcycles, there is a night-time driving ban between 8:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. There are also general entry restrictions: during the summer months from June to August, entry is not permitted between 10:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m., while during the rest of the year, an entry ban applies from 9:30 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. Please plan your journey accordingly to take these time windows into account.

Special toll: What does this mean?

Villach Alpine Road

The Villach Alpine Road is a so-called special toll route. This means that using the road incurs an additional fee, which must be paid independently of the vignette or a distance-based toll. Payment is made directly on-site at the toll booth.

However, this rule applies exclusively to the summer season. During the winter months, the special toll is waived entirely, meaning you can use the road free of charge.

Overview of usage fee (special toll) prices

During the toll-liable summer season, the costs depend on the respective vehicle type. Basically, a distinction is made between cars, motorcycles, motorhomes, buses and trucks. As with other special toll routes, different or reduced rates may apply depending on the type of drive (for example, for electric vehicles). If you stay overnight at one of the guest establishments along the road, no additional costs will be incurred upon exit, even if your stay is longer.

During the winter season, the toll fee for the ascent is waived entirely. However, please note that parking fees apply from 15 November to 15 April. A corresponding parking ticket can be purchased directly from the machine on-site.

Further notes on usage

Villach Alpine Road

Automatic number plate recognition is used at the toll booths for the use of the Villach Alpine Road. This ensures efficient toll processing without any additional effort on your part.

Please also note that camping along the road is not permitted by the authorities and there are no designated campsites in the immediate vicinity of the road. If you're planning an overnight stay, you should therefore look for official accommodation or camping options in the surrounding area.

Alternative: Kärnten Card

If you have a valid Kärnten Card, you can use the Villach Alpine Road once a day free of charge. In addition, numerous facilities in the Dobratsch Nature Park are also included, with the exception of the Alpine Garden.

For passengers without a Kärnten Card, an additional fee of €7 per person is charged. Please note that in the event of suspected misuse, the matter may be referred to the relevant Kärnten Card office, which may result in corresponding consequences.

The Europamaut team wishes you a pleasant journey!

The Villach Alpine Road offers a special experience at any time of year: in summer as a classic panoramic road with comprehensive infrastructure, and in winter as a free excursion route into the snowy mountains. Thanks to its year-round accessibility and varied scenery, the route is perfect for a day trip or as part of your trip to Austria.

When planning your trip, remember that a vignette or distance-based toll is required for travel on Austrian motorways (depending on vehicle class). In addition to the special toll, a vignette is therefore required for vehicles up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight. The digital 10-day vignette for Austria is included in our vignette flat rate – the distance-based toll is not included. If you need further information on tolls in Austria or on specific special toll routes, you can find this in our guide. We are also available at any time by email.
