Nockalmstraße

The Nockalmstraße is one of Austria's most beautiful panoramic roads and leads through the UNESCO Biosphere Park Nockberge in Carinthia. Over roughly 35 kilometres, travellers experience a unique combination of gentle alpine meadows, winding mountain roads and impressive views. Unlike classic transit routes, the focus here is clearly on the nature experience: numerous viewpoints, themed trails and exhibitions along the route make the drive especially appealing for holidaymakers, motorcyclists and nature lovers.

The Nockalmstraße can be driven by car, motorcycle, motorhome as well as bus and truck, and is ideal for a relaxed day trip into the Austrian Alps. Highlights include the Biosphere Park, numerous viewpoints and regional restaurants along the alpine road.

Opening hours of the Nockalmstraße

Nockalmstraße

Seasonal opening hours

The Nockalmstraße is not open all year round. Due to its altitude, there is a winter closure from late October to early May. Accordingly, the season starts in early May and runs until the end of October. Even during the season, please pay attention to the weather conditions.

Important notes on opening hours

In addition to the seasonal opening hours, there are certain regulations you must observe when using the Nockalmstraße. There is a motorcycle ban from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. Accordingly, motorcyclists may only enter the Nockalmstraße up until 5:15 p.m. at the latest (last entry time). In addition, the general driving time for the entire Nockstraße is 45 minutes. The exhibitions along the route are open from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (longer opening hours are also possible in good weather).

In general: plan enough time for stops along the way, as the Nockalmstraße practically invites you to explore.

Special toll: what does that mean?

The Nockalmstraße is a special toll route. This means that an additional fee is charged for its use, regardless of the vignette or the distance-based toll in Austria. Please therefore bear in mind that you need to budget additional costs for your trip in order to use the route. Payment is made directly at the toll booths on site.

Prices for the usage fee (special toll) and our tips

Vehicles

The cost of using the Nockalmstraße varies depending on the vehicle type and ticket type. As a rule, motorcycles pay less than cars, while larger vehicles such as buses or trucks pay higher fees.
Electric and hydrogen vehicles benefit from discounted rates compared to conventional combustion vehicles. This requires appropriate proof (e.g. registration certificate) directly at the toll booth. Since prices can change and vary by category, we recommend checking the current rates directly on the Nockalmstraße website.

Notes on use & ticket options

With a day ticket you can drive the road several times on the same day. If you stop at a restaurant along the route and stay overnight there, you do not need to pay an additional fee when leaving the route. Please note, however, that you are not allowed to camp along the road. Camping is prohibited on the Nockalmstraße.

In addition to the day ticket, a season pass is also available. This is valid until the winter closure and can only be purchased for private vehicles. Besides the day ticket and the season pass, there is also the KärntenCard. With this, you can use the Nockalmstraße once a day, including all facilities in the Biosphere Park. For passengers in the vehicle without a KärntenCard, an additional fee of €7 per person applies. Please note that the KärntenCard is subject to random checks. Therefore, keep your card and, if necessary, a photo ID ready. In case of suspected misuse, this may be forwarded to the relevant KärntenCard office, which can result in corresponding consequences (such as blocking or withdrawal).

Further important tips for your trip

The Nockalmstraße is a popular excursion destination, especially during the summer months. Therefore, plan for possible delays due to increased traffic volume.

You should also be sure to check the current weather conditions before your trip, as these can change quickly in alpine regions.
