Austria: Luegbrücke on the Brenner motorway A13 single-lane again from 19 to 22 October 2026 AI generated

At the Luegbrücke on the A13 Brenner Motorway in Tyrol, there will be additional restrictions in October 2026: due to road surface renovation work, only one lane per direction will be available during the day, after the first block from October 12 to 15 once again from October 19 to 22. The work is scheduled to be completed by October 23, 2026 at the latest, weather permitting. That's according to the ÖAMTC (as of October 14, 2026).

The A13 is the most important north-south connection between Germany, Austria and Italy. Anyone traveling over the Brenner Pass during the autumn school holidays should therefore allow extra time.

Night driving bans for heavy vehicles

The main work takes place at night. Additional driving bans therefore apply to vehicles over 3.5 t; cars are not affected:

Trucks over 3.5 t are not permitted to drive on the A12 Inntal Motorway or the A13 Brenner Motorway in either direction from 9 pm to 5 am if their destination can only be reached via the Luegbrücke.

All other vehicles over 3.5 t, including buses and caravans, are not permitted on the stretch between the Matrei-Steinach and Brenner-Nord junctions from 10 pm to 5 am. For buses, the ÖAMTC names the B 182 Brennerstraße as a regional detour.

Police checks take place at Pettnau in the Oberland region and at Kufstein in the Unterland region, right at the entry points into Tyrol, as well as at the Matrei-Steinach and Brenner-Nord junctions. Affected vehicles will be redirected there.

What car drivers should keep in mind

There is no night closure for cars. During the day, however, only one lane per direction is open, so the ÖAMTC advises drivers on the A13 to plan for delays. Even otherwise, despite the two-lane setup, significant congestion can occur on high-traffic days. A section control system is also in operation on the stretch from the start of the Luegbrücke to just before Brenner-Nord.

Why the Luegbrücke remains a recurring topic

Since January 1, 2025, for safety reasons only one lane per direction has generally been in use on the bridge; on around 180 high-traffic days per year, two lanes are available again. A new bridge is being built alongside the old one and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2030. Vignette and toll on the Brenner route

On the A12 and A13 in Tyrol, cars need the vignette for Austria. On the A13, an additional route toll applies; you can find details in our guide. Anyone also using the Inntal Motorway can find the current full closure on the A12 in our article on the Landeck Tunnel, where the detour may further extend travel time.

Austria toll at a glance

For cars, motorcycles and motorhomes up to 3.5 t GVW, the digital vignette requirement applies on motorways and expressways. It is a flat fee for a fixed period.

For trucks, buses and larger motorhomes over 3.5 t GVW, the distance-based toll applies instead, paid with the GO-Box. Its amount depends on factors such as the distance driven, number of axles and emission class. In addition, individual tunnels and mountain roads (e.g. Brenner, Tauern Tunnel, Karawanken Tunnel) charge a separate special toll, regardless of any other toll product.
