Landeck Tunnel (A12): Eight-Week Full Closure from October 2026 AI generated

ASFINAG will close the Landeck Tunnel on the A12 Inntal motorway from around 12 October 2026 for about eight weeks, around the clock. This affects one of the central transit routes between Germany, Austria and Italy. During the closure, traffic will be diverted via the L76 and the B171.

Anyone travelling south via the Arlberg or Fernpass in autumn should factor the closure into their route planning early on.

What exactly is being closed

The Landeck Tunnel near Landeck in Tyrol is part of the A12 Inntal motorway and a heavily used connection towards the Arlberg and Fernpass. As preparation, nightly closures between 7:30 pm and 6:00 am have already been in effect there since 13 April 2026. From mid-October, a full round-the-clock closure will then follow for around eight weeks. The reason is a comprehensive renovation of the tunnel, including the construction of a new escape and rescue tunnel around 7 kilometres long, a project with an investment volume of around 292 million euros.

Important for travel planning in the coming years: the 2026 closure is only the beginning. According to ASFINAG, from 2027 to 2030 one month in spring and two months in autumn can be expected to see full closures of the tunnel each year.

Tolls in Austria

Regardless of the construction site, the vignette requirement applies on the A12 as on all Austrian motorways and expressways for vehicles up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight. For trucks, buses and heavier vehicles over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight, however, the toll is charged based on distance via the GO-Box, according to kilometres driven, vehicle class and emission class. On certain routes, such as specific tunnels and mountain pass roads, an additional special toll also applies.

Instead of buying a vignette separately for each trip, many travellers rely on the Europamaut flat rate. For €12.80* a month, vignettes for all eight supported countries are covered.

* ASFINAG toll fee (10-day vignette): €12.80, full reimbursement of the toll fee by DMC, flat rate (per calendar month): €12.80, notice period 0 days

The Europamaut team wishes you a pleasant journey!
