Austria: 2027 vignette to get two percent more expensive and become digital-only
The annual vignette for cars in Austria will become two percent more expensive in 2027 and will cost, according to media reports, around 109 euros instead of the previous 106.80 euros. Transport Minister Peter Hanke announced the moderated increase on 22 October 2026: the legally mandated inflation adjustment would have amounted to 3.6 percent. ASFINAG has not yet published the new rates and is awaiting the corresponding regulation.
What is known so far
For the annual vignette, media reports cite a price of around 108.90 euros (+2.10 euros), and for the daily vignette around 9.80 euros instead of 9.60 euros. These are calculated figures, not official rates. There is still no information on the prices of the 2-month and 10-day vignettes. ASFINAG can only announce the prices once the regulation is in place.
The new prices will apply from 1 January 2027. According to ARBÖ, the 2027 vignette will still cost 106.80 euros until 31 December 2026. This rule has not yet been confirmed by ASFINAG.
Digital only from 2027
With the 2027 vignette year, the windscreen sticker will disappear: the vignette will then be available exclusively in digital form and linked to the license plate. The 2026 sticker vignette will remain valid until 31 January 2027. According to media reports, the 2027 vignette will be valid from 1 December 2026 to 31 January 2028. Be careful when buying online
Anyone buying the digital annual or 2-month vignette online as a private individual can only use it after 18 days due to the statutory right of withdrawal. Those buying shortly before a trip should plan for this. Without a valid vignette, you risk substitute tolls and fines; details can be found under Fines and consequences in Austria. Which vehicles are subject to the vignette requirement is explained on the page about vehicle classes in Austria.
Austria toll at a glance
For cars, motorcycles, and motorhomes up to 3.5 t gross weight, the vignette requirement applies on motorways and expressways (digital or as a sticker vignette, from the 2027 vignette year onwards only digital). It is a flat amount for a fixed period.
For trucks, buses and larger motorhomes over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight, distance-based tolling via the GO-Box applies instead, with the amount depending on factors such as distance travelled, number of axles and emission class. On certain tunnel and pass routes (e.g. Brenner, Tauern Tunnel, Karawanks Tunnel), a separate special toll (route toll) applies: vehicles up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight pay it instead of the vignette, while for vehicles over 3.5 t it is charged via the GO-Box.
