Austria: A1 Westautobahn – Haag exit closed until November 8 (September/October 2026)
On the Westautobahn A1 between Vienna and Salzburg, travelers must still expect a complete closure for several weeks: the Haag exit in the direction of Salzburg has been completely closed since September 7, 2026, due to renovation work by ASFINAG – expected to last until November 8, 2026.
Anyone traveling from Vienna towards Salzburg who wants to exit the motorway at Haag must already leave at the previous exit, Oed, and follow the signposted detour via the B1 federal road into the town of Haag. In the opposite direction, coming from Linz or Salzburg towards Vienna, the Haag exit remains open; however, in case of heavier traffic, ASFINAG recommends exiting already at St. Valentin and likewise continuing via the B1.
Why the closure is also relevant for travelers heading to Germany
The A1 between Vienna, Linz, and Salzburg is one of Austria's key east-west transit routes and is the main route for many travelers from Vienna and Salzburg continuing on to Bavaria and Germany. Anyone driving straight through on the A1 without exiting at Haag is not affected by the closure. However, on the detour route via Oed and the B1, additional waiting times may occur, particularly on weekends with heavier travel traffic.
Vignette requirement still applies only on the motorway itself
The A1 itself remains subject to the vignette requirement for cars and motorhomes up to 3.5 tons, whereas the short detour via the B1 is a toll-free federal road with no vignette requirement. Anyone who also uses one of Austria's special toll routes during their journey should budget for its fee separately – it is independent of the ASFINAG construction site at Haag described here.

For cars, motorcycles, and motorhomes up to 3.5 t gross weight, the vignette requirement applies on motorways and expressways (digital or as a sticker vignette, from the 2027 vignette year onwards only digital). It is a flat amount for a fixed period.
For trucks, buses and larger motorhomes over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight, distance-based tolling via the GO-Box applies instead, with the amount depending on factors such as distance travelled, number of axles and emission class. On certain tunnel and pass routes (e.g. Brenner, Tauern Tunnel, Karawanks Tunnel), a separate special toll (route toll) applies: vehicles up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight pay it instead of the vignette, while for vehicles over 3.5 t it is charged via the GO-Box.
