Would you like to explore the natural beauty of Slovenia? In addition to the impressive Triglav National Park and the Soča Valley, you should also take note of the beautiful Logar Valley. It is considered one of the most stunning glacial valleys in Europe and is located in the northern part of Slovenia, specifically in the Solčava region.
The Logar Valley is renowned for its pristine green landscape and impresses visitors with largely untouched natural areas. The scientific and ethnographic nature trail is particularly recommended, as it guides visitors to the most scenic parts of the valley. Along the way, you can discover rare and protected plant species and admire the remarkable diversity of colors. The various alpine flowers and mountain meadows are especially noteworthy.
Not only the plant life, but also the wildlife of the Logar Valley is impressive. Bringing a pair of binoculars is advisable to observe golden eagles and peregrine falcons circling overhead. You may also encounter agile climbers such as ibex and chamois. A regional specialty is the native “Brillenschaf” sheep, which is characteristic of this area.
Visitors interested in botany should explore the Okrešelj cirque, a true botanical oasis home to a wide variety of extraordinary plant species. These include rare lady’s slipper orchids, Carniolan lilies, and Kamnik orchids.
Okrešelj lies beneath the rock faces of the peaks Mrzla Gora, Turska Gora, Rinke, and Križ. The valley blends harmoniously into the imposing mountain scenery and resembles a natural amphitheater. It is also the location of the impressive Rinka Waterfall.
One of the most famous natural highlights of the Logar Valley is the approximately 90-meter-high Rinka Waterfall, surrounded by a spectacular mountain landscape with peaks exceeding 2,000 meters. It is among the most visited waterfalls in Slovenia and offers an unforgettable natural experience.
The waterfall is easily accessible on foot. Hiking trails from Solčava lead through the Logar Valley and bring you to the waterfall within about 15 to 20 minutes. If you prefer to arrive by car, an entrance fee for the landscape park is required during spring and summer.
Another designated natural monument is the Palenk Waterfall, located above the eastern side of the valley. The water cascades down multiple rock steps over a total height of 78 meters. Additional smaller waterfalls can be discovered above the main cascade.
On the left slope of the valley, you will also find the Brloznica Waterfalls and the nearby Brloznica Cave. The stream emerges from the cave at approximately 1,222 meters above sea level and plunges 125 meters downward. It divides into four individual waterfalls, enhancing the dramatic natural scenery. Not far from the waterfall, you can also discover a natural rock window beneath which a hiking trail passes.
The Logar Valley offers excellent opportunities for an active holiday. Explore the surrounding mountains via well-marked hiking trails, discover the valley by bicycle, or enjoy climbing excursions. The impressive natural surroundings also provide outstanding photographic opportunities.
The valley is equally suitable for families. Its fairy-tale-like forests inspire children’s imaginations and create memorable outdoor experiences.
The Logar Valley is not only attractive during the summer months. In winter, visitors can enjoy activities such as cross-country skiing, sledding, alpine skiing, and skiing. A particular highlight is ice climbing on frozen waterfalls, especially at Palenk Waterfall.
Those wishing to experience traditional Slovenia should visit the characteristic wooden granaries of the Logar Valley. These structures, also known as “Kaste” or “Lesene kašče,” were historically used as storage facilities for grain and food supplies. Some are still in use today.
The chapel was originally designed at the request of the valley’s residents based on a concept by Jože Plečnik, though it was not realized entirely according to his plans. Its current appearance follows the design of architect Martin Goloba. Located at the entrance of the Logar Valley near the road to Pavličevo sedlo, the chapel offers both cultural insight and a magnificent view of the valley.
While exploring the valley—perhaps by bicycle—you may wish to take a culinary break. The Slovenian cuisine offers a variety of regional specialties. More information about traditional dishes can be found in our guide.
