Switzerland: Sargans motorway junction (A13/A3) closed at night until October 10
The Sargans motorway junction, where the A3 from Zurich meets the A13 towards Chur, Liechtenstein and the San Bernardino Pass, will be closed at night in several stages between 27 September and 10 October 2026. The reason is resurfacing work carried out by the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO), Winterthur branch, to renew the carriageway at the junction.
The closures affect individual entry and exit ramps of the junction, not the through main carriageway of the A3 and A13. Anyone continuing their journey via Sargans during this period, for example towards Graubünden, Liechtenstein or Austria, should be aware of the construction phases and closure times.
Which construction phases are affected and when?
The work takes place in staggered stages, mostly at night from Sunday to Friday evening, each time between 8 pm and 5 am. It begins on the night of 27 to 28 September 2026 with the exit towards Flums-Bad Ragaz, followed by the entry in the same direction on the night of 28 to 29 September and the entry towards Bad Ragaz-Flums on the night of 29 to 30 September. The remaining ramps follow in stages until 10 October 2026. On 2 and 8 October, additional daytime work will take place, accompanied by on-site traffic control.
Why the Sargans junction is important for travellers
Sargans is a central junction point in the Swiss motorway network: here the A3 from Zurich and Lake Walen joins the A13, which continues towards Chur, Liechtenstein and, via the San Bernardino Pass, all the way to Italy. During the nightly ramp closures, FEDRO will divert traffic via signposted detours, which may result in somewhat longer journey times. Anyone planning to take the route via the Gotthard instead should also take into account the night closures there during the same period, as both routes are considered alternative alpine transit routes to one another.
For the entire journey through Switzerland, the regular vignette requirement applies regardless of the construction work, for cars, motorcycles and motorhomes with a permissible gross weight of up to 3.5 tonnes.
