Slovakia: D1 Prešov tunnel completely closed this weekend (September 2026)
Anyone driving through Prešov on the central Slovak D1 motorway in the coming days should expect traffic disruptions: the state motorway operator NDS is closing the section between the Prešov-West and Prešov-South junctions, including the Prešov tunnel, for two more nights (23 and 24 September, 8 pm to 6 am each) and then completely from 8 pm on 25 September until 4 pm on 27 September.
The reason is the annual autumn maintenance of the tunnel: in addition to cleaning the roadway and walls, fire protection systems, emergency doors, SOS cabins and lighting will be inspected, and crack repairs are also scheduled.
Diversion through Prešov
During the closures, traffic will be diverted via roads I/18 and I/68 through the town of Prešov, with the route marked by temporary traffic signs. Anyone travelling over the entire weekend (25 to 27 September) should expect heavier holiday traffic, particularly on Saturday, and correspondingly longer waiting times on the diversion.
Second construction site on the D1: Bôrik tunnel near Poprad
The works at Prešov are part of a larger autumn maintenance programme by the NDS on the central D1, which this year also affects the Bôrik tunnel further west near Poprad. Anyone planning the entire route from Bratislava via the High Tatras to Košice and onward towards the Polish border should find out about both construction sites before setting off, as the closure times may overlap.
