Renovation of the Pyhrn-Motorway A9

The A9 Pyhrnautobahn is one of the most heavily used motorway sections in Styria, located north of Graz. It is used by up to 50,000 vehicles daily. Therefore, the planned renovation works could have an enormous impact on traffic. Nevertheless, the works on the A9 are necessary.

The renovations are taking place between the two Gratkorn tunnels and northwards to the Deutschfeistritz junction. On the 8-kilometre-long stretch, not only the carriageway and the associated ten bridges will be renewed, but noise and environmental protection will also be expanded. Noise protection is set to be 500 metres longer in future. In addition, eight water protection facilities will be constructed in the interest of environmental protection. The entire renovation works are to be carried out in two stages. Until the end of the year (December 2025), the works will take place between the two Gratkorn tunnels, with the tunnels themselves not being affected. In the coming year (2026), construction work will begin on the section up to the Deutschfeistritz junction.

The first stage began this week (17.03.2025) with the set-up of the first of a total of seven traffic management phases. These are intended to keep traffic flowing, making two lanes available per direction of travel despite the ongoing renovation works. Due to these new traffic management arrangements, different speed limits apply. Accordingly, for safety reasons, speeds must not exceed 80 km/h.
