Pyhrn Autobahn A9 Renovation
The A9 Pyhrn Motorway is one of the most heavily used motorway sections in Styria and is located north of Graz. It is used by up to 50,000 vehicles daily. As a result, the planned renovation works could significantly impact traffic. Nevertheless, the works on the A9 are necessary.
The renovations are taking place between the two Gratkorn tunnels as well as north to the Deutschfeistritz junction. Along the 8-kilometre stretch, however, not only will the roadway and the associated ten bridges be renewed, but the noise and environmental protection will also be expanded. The noise barrier is set to be 500 metres longer in the future. In addition, eight water protection facilities will be built for environmental protection purposes. The entire renovation works are to be carried out in two stages. By the end of the year (December 2025), work will take place between the two Gratkorn tunnels, with the tunnels themselves not being affected. Next year (2026), construction work will begin on the stretch up to the Deutschfeistritz junction.
The first stage began this week (17.03.2025) with the introduction of the first of a total of seven traffic management phases. These are intended to keep traffic flowing, enabling two lanes per direction of travel to remain usable despite the ongoing renovation works. Due to these new traffic arrangements, different speed limits apply. Accordingly, for safety reasons, speeds must not exceed 80 km/h.
