Austria: A9 Gleinalm Tunnel closed at night from October 12, 2026
On the Pyhrn Autobahn A9 in Styria, the Gleinalm Tunnel will be closed at night in autumn 2026 for maintenance work. It starts as early as this evening, 12 October 2026: First, the eastern tube towards Voralpenkreuz will be closed in the nights from 12 to 13 and from 13 to 14 October, each time from 8 pm to 5 am.
This is followed by the western tube towards Spielfeld in the nights from 14 to 15 and from 15 to 16 October, also from 8 pm to 5 am. Further closures are announced for November, including a total closure of both tubes in the night from 3 to 4 November. At more than eight kilometres, the Gleinalm Tunnel is one of the longest road tunnels in Austria and an important connection between Graz and the north of the country.
All closure dates at a glance
Closures will run from 8 pm to 5 am each time. According to ÖAMTC, these nights are planned for the maintenance and renovation work: eastern tube (towards Voralpenkreuz) on 12/13 and 13/14 October, western tube (towards Spielfeld) on 14/15 and 15/16 October. In November, the western tube follows on the nights of 2/3, 4/5 and 5/6 November, as well as the total closure of both tubes on 3/4 November. Traffic will run normally during the day.
Detour via S6 and S35
During the closure periods, travel on the A9 between Übelbach and Peggau will not be possible in the respective closed direction. Traffic will be diverted over a wide area between the St. Michael junction and the Peggau-Deutschfeistritz junction via the S6 Semmering Schnellstraße and the S35 Brucker Schnellstraße. Anyone travelling between Graz and Upper Austria, Salzburg or the greater Vienna area in the evening or at night should ideally drive through the tunnel before 8 pm or allow for extra time.
Further restrictions on the route through Austria
The Gleinalm Tunnel is not the only construction site on the Pyhrn Autobahn. Just a few kilometres further north, the Bosruck Tunnel was recently completely closed for eight nights, with a second closure week from 19 to 23 October. On the ongoing route renewal, we have also published an article on the renovation of the Pyhrn Autobahn A9. On the transit route through Tyrol, the Landeck Tunnel on the A12 has been completely closed for eight weeks since early this morning. Please check your route before setting off.
Austria toll at a glance
For cars, motorcycles and motorhomes up to 3.5 t GVW, the digital vignette requirement applies on motorways and expressways. It is a flat fee for a fixed period.
For trucks, buses and larger motorhomes over 3.5 t GVW, the distance-based toll applies instead, paid with the GO-Box. Its amount depends on factors such as the distance driven, number of axles and emission class. In addition, individual tunnels and mountain roads (e.g. Brenner, Tauern Tunnel, Karawanken Tunnel) charge a separate special toll, regardless of any other toll product.
