Austria: A9 Bosruck Tunnel completely closed for eight nights in October 2026 AI generated

On the Pyhrn Motorway A9 between Upper Austria and Styria, travellers must expect nightly full closures of the Bosruck Tunnel in October 2026. The tunnel will be closed in both tubes from 5 to 9 October and from 19 to 23 October 2026, each time from 8 pm to 5 am.

Closures will take place on the nights from Monday to Tuesday, Tuesday to Wednesday, Wednesday to Thursday, and Thursday to Friday, totalling eight nights. The reason is technical work by the motorway operator ASFINAG, for which both tunnel tubes will be taken out of service at the same time. At around 5.5 kilometres, the Bosruck Tunnel is one of the longest tunnels on the A9 and connects Spital am Pyhrn with Ardning.

Diversion via the Pyhrn Pass

During the closure periods, traffic will be diverted via the B138 Pyhrn Pass Road. Increased traffic volumes and longer travel times are to be expected particularly in Spital am Pyhrn, on the Liezen feeder road, and in Liezen itself. Anyone travelling on the A9 in the evening or at night, for example heading towards Graz, Slovenia, or Croatia, should try to pass through the tunnel before 8 pm or allow for a sufficient time buffer. During the day and on weekends, traffic will run normally.

Further roadworks on the route to Austria

The Bosruck Tunnel is not the only restriction this autumn. Work has already been underway on the A9 for some time, which we reported on in a dedicated article on the renovation of the Pyhrn Motorway. On the transit route through Tyrol, the eight-week full closure of the Landeck Tunnel on the A12 is also coming up, and the Innkreis Motorway A8 has already been closed in one direction for months. Anyone travelling through Austria by car should therefore check the route before setting off.

Austria toll at a glance

For cars, motorcycles and motorhomes up to 3.5 t GVW, the digital vignette requirement applies on motorways and expressways. It is a flat fee for a fixed period.

For trucks, buses and larger motorhomes over 3.5 t GVW, the distance-based toll applies instead, paid with the GO-Box. Its amount depends on factors such as the distance driven, number of axles and emission class. In addition, individual tunnels and mountain roads (e.g. Brenner, Tauern Tunnel, Karawanken Tunnel) charge a separate special toll, regardless of any other toll product.
