After a wonderful time in Slovenia and especially in the Soča Valley, it was time to head back to Germany. But not without taking in one last highlight: the impressive Vršič Pass. This route crosses the mountains from the northern Soča Valley over to the town of Kranjska Gora, which is a popular destination especially for skiers. On the way over the pass, you should make a stop or two along the way: once to hike to the source of the Soča River, and once at the very top to admire the stunning mountain panorama.
If you like, you can easily spend another two days in Kranjska Gora afterwards (which is exactly what I did). Because even though it is primarily a winter destination, I found plenty to enjoy in the region in summer too: the Jasna Lake invites you to relax, the beautiful Pišnica alpine valley, traversed by the stream of the same name, is wonderful to explore on foot, and the Zelenci Nature Reserve, a stunning wetland, also offers the opportunity for leisurely walks.
From Kranjska Gora, I set off back to Germany refreshed and full of wonderful impressions. Since I had already obtained my digital vignette for the drive through Austria in advance, I had nothing to worry about on my return journey either and could head home without a care. Just as carefree as I had been throughout the entire trip with my electronic monthly vignette in Slovenia.
All that's left is my conclusion! And it is incredibly positive: Slovenia impressed me even more than I had initially expected. The small country on the edge of the Alps is truly something special and incredibly diverse: beautiful cities, breathtaking mountain landscapes, idyllic wine-growing regions, fascinating caves and castles, dreamlike lakes and impressive architecture — the country truly has something for every taste. It won me over completely, and I am sure of one thing: I will be back!
