In Slovenia's capital, Ljubljana, I rented a small but lovely apartment right in the city center. From there, I strolled daily through the many charming streets of the city and regularly settled down in small cafes and wine bars.
A long walk also took me along the Ljubljana River. It runs through the capital and offers beautiful paths on both sides for walkers. Since there are bridges at regular intervals leading from one riverbank to the other, you can easily march out of the city and switch sides at any time to return to the city center. This is exactly where you should definitely be in the evening: There are countless restaurants and bars along the river promenade, where not only delicious food is served, but also a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere prevails.
On the way there, it’s worth making a quick stop at the Tromostovje Bridges: The three-part bridge made of massive stone stands out distinctly from the crowd and offers a beautiful spot for a vacation photo or two.
Another absolute highlight was the visit to the Ljubljana Castle: The beautiful building majestically towers over the old town and offers a breathtaking view. For that alone, it’s worth making the trip up there (don’t worry, there is a modern cable car in addition to the steep hiking path that takes you to this popular sightseeing destination). It gets even better with a glass of fine white wine from the drink stand – this makes it especially enjoyable in the late afternoon or at sunset on the viewing platform. A must-do in Ljubljana!
On my last day in Slovenia's capital, I visited the beautiful Tivoli Park. The large city park, composed of forests, meadows, and a botanical garden, offers a relaxing break from the urban hustle and bustle of the city. In Ljubljana’s green heart, you can easily spend many hours – whether just to relax or for a little hike.
