Strolling and enjoying life in Ljubljana

The banks of the Ljubljanica in Ljubljana with colorful facades and street cafés

In Slovenia's capital Ljubljana I had rented a small but lovely apartment right in the middle of the city. From there I strolled daily through the many charming lanes of the city and regularly settled down in small cafés and wine bars.

An extensive walk also took me along the Ljubljanica River. It runs right through the capital and offers lovely paths for walkers on both sides. Since there are bridges at regular intervals leading from one side of the river to the other, you can simply walk out of the city on one side and switch sides at any time to head back into the city center. That's exactly where you should definitely be again in the evening: along the riverside promenade there are countless restaurants and bars offering not only delicious food but also a wonderfully lively atmosphere.

On the way there, it's worth making a short stop at the Triple Bridge (Tromostovje): the three-part bridge made of solid stone really stands out from the crowd and offers a lovely spot for a holiday photo or two.

Don't miss the castle and the park!

An absolute highlight was also the visit to Ljubljana Castle: the beautiful building sits majestically above the old town and offers a breathtaking view. That alone makes the trip up there worthwhile (don't worry, besides the steep hiking trail there's also a state-of-the-art cable car that takes you to this popular sightseeing destination). It gets even better with a glass of fine white wine from the drinks stand – perfect for relaxing on the viewing platform, especially in the late afternoon or at sunset. A definite must-do in Ljubljana!

On my last day in Slovenia's capital, I visited the beautiful Tivoli Park. This large city park with its forests, meadows, and a botanical garden offers a refreshing change from the urban hustle and bustle of the city. In Ljubljana's green heart, you can easily spend many hours – whether simply to relax or for a little hike.
