Lake Bled Island – Church of the Assumption of Mary
Rising above Lake Bled is a striking cliff crowned by the Church of the Assumption of Mary. The island can be reached in traditional style by a “pletna,” a wooden rowing boat that has been transporting visitors across the lake since 1590. Upon arrival, you will discover the church, originally built in the 15th century and adorned with elegant golden details. The freestanding bell tower is particularly noteworthy, offering sweeping views of the surrounding natural scenery.
Next to the church stands the former provost’s house, which was structurally combined with the parish building in the 20th century. Since 2012, it has housed the “Potičnica,” a venue serving traditional Slovenian potica. Bled Castle – The Oldest Castle in Slovenia
The history of Bled Castle dates back to the year 1011. Originally consisting of only a tower with defensive walls, it served as a fortress under the authority of the bishops. Between 1951 and 1961, the castle underwent extensive renovations. Today, it features a servants’ house, an inner courtyard, a historic castle printing workshop, and a wine cellar.
At the castle printing workshop, visitors can learn about traditional printing techniques and create their own souvenir certificate. In the castle wine cellar, wine enthusiasts have the opportunity to fill and seal a bottle of wine with wax.
Additional attractions include a well carved into the rock, the Stolp Gallery, the memorial room dedicated to Arnold Rikli, and the exhibition of the Gorenjska Regional Museums. Unique souvenirs are also available from the castle’s beekeeping products.
The castle offers insight into the earliest history of Bled and presents exhibitions on the living culture of past eras. During the summer months, cultural events such as medieval days take place, bringing history to life through reenactments.
Castle Chapel
In the upper courtyard stands the Gothic chapel from the 16th century, dedicated to Bishops St. Albuin and St. Ingenuin. Since the 17th century, Baroque statues and frescoes have adorned the chapel, including depictions of Emperor Henry II and his wife. From the castle, visitors can enjoy impressive views of Bled Island, the town, and the alpine region of Gorenjska.

Vintgar Gorge
Vintgar Gorge is located approximately four kilometers northwest of Bled. Formed by the Radovna River, the gorge stretches between the mountains Hom and Boršt. Along the hiking trail, visitors can admire rapids and waterfalls. Two remarkable man-made structures also stand out: a dam and the stone arch bridge of the Bohinj Railway. With a bit of luck, you may witness a train crossing the bridge.
