The bears' habitat: The Slovakian mountains and hiking trails
The Slovakian mountains are the home of the brown bears. To this day, an estimated 1,300-2,000 brown bears live in Slovakia. By nature, the bear is a rather shy animal as soon as it hears humans. Therefore, you should always make noise, talk or laugh together during your hikes. These sounds help the bears to determine your position and lead them to keep their distance from you. During your hiking adventure, always make sure to never leave food scraps behind, especially at resting spots. Under no circumstances should you lure bears with food! Even though bears naturally avoid contact with humans, they still tend to be very dangerous animals that can seriously or even fatally injure a person. If, unexpectedly, you should have a direct encounter with a bear, please stay calm, do not move closer to the bear, and only continue on your way once the bear has retreated.
Opportunities for refreshment on your hiking adventure
Slovakia also boasts cozy mountain huts and mountain hotels that serve you delicious food and cool refreshments. Almost all locations are open year-round and invite you to enjoy their rich selection of food and drinks. Slovakia offers a variety of traditional dishes. You can discover these in our guide. The huts often serve garlic and sauerkraut soup, goulash, Germknödel, or delicious herbal tea. In addition, many hiking trails run alongside water and mineral springs, so you can refill your water bottle during your adventure.
Bear watching in the High Tatras
The High Tatras are the highest part of the Carpathians and part of the Tatra National Park. Since 1993, the Slovakian national park has been part of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and offers you the chance to observe the impressive brown bears up close. Explore the unique nature of the Carpathians and follow the tracks of its inhabitants on a bear watching expedition. Admire the bears from a safe distance in the presence of an experienced tour guide. But bears are not the only animals roaming this area! You also have the chance to spot wolves and lynxes. Chamois and marmots can also be found in the High Tatras.
The best time for bear watching in the High Tatras
Early summer is the best time of year to observe bears in their natural environment. During this season, bears are particularly found on steep slopes searching for plants. However, it can generally be said that there is a chance to spot bears at any time of year.
Bear watching in the Little Fatra: Malá Fatra
The Malá Fatra National Park, also known as the Little Fatra, is located in the north of Slovakia, near the city of Žilina. This mountain range is also home to a great variety of species and is often explored in more detail using binoculars and magnifying glasses. Discover alpine rock walls, blooming meadows, and impressive waterfalls. Malá Fatra is also part of the Carpathians.
In addition to deer, wild boars, foxes, and badgers, the forests, valleys, and gorges are home to the "Big Three". These are the highlight of Slovakia. The big three of Malá Fatra represent brown bears, lynxes, and wolves! Explore the diverse nature and follow the tracks of these impressive animals. Enjoy a hike in nature and let an experienced tour guide lead the way. Here too, it is important not to disturb the bears in their natural habitat and to be aware that bears are dangerous, but also shy. Accordingly, bear sightings are always possible, but not guaranteed due to their shyness. The chance of spotting a brown bear in the wild is therefore significantly higher with a tour guide than without one. The tour guides know the area best and know in which parts of Malá Fatra a sighting is most likely.
The best time for bear watching in the Little Fatra
The best times to explore the brown bears' surroundings, including the chance to spot bears, are spring and autumn. During these seasons, the brown bears are most active.
In spring (April to June), brown bears begin searching for food after the cold winter. As a result, they are very present in the forests and easier to spot, especially if you set out on a hike in the early morning hours or late afternoon.
In autumn (September to November), bears eat very intensively, as winter is directly approaching. They need the fat reserves to protect themselves from the cool winter temperatures and avoid starving. The chances of sightings are therefore, similar to spring, particularly high, as brown bears often search for berries and other food sources.
