e-TOLL in Poland: app or on-board device
Since 2021, if you drive a vehicle over 3.5 t GVW (as well as buses with more than nine seats), you must pay your toll via e-TOLL. It replaces the former viaTOLL toll system in Poland, which was used on selected sections of Polish roads for vehicles over 3.5 t GVW from 01.07.2011. The device you needed for viaTOLL in the form of the viaBOX in Poland to pay the toll is replaced under e-TOLL by an OBU (on-board unit) or ZSL on-board device. Both of these data-collection devices enable automatic toll billing.
With e-TOLL, satellite-based vehicle tracking (GPS) is used, so that once you have activated the e-TOLL app or the on-board device, the location of your vehicle can be recorded. This allows the kilometres driven on the toll motorway to be determined and added up. Because the charges are calculated based on the distance driven, the toll is collected as a distance-based toll.
You can find out on which routes in Poland tolls apply on our page Toll in Poland. For vehicles up to 3.5 t GVW (e.g. cars), e-TOLL is not required: tolls apply there on the concession motorways A1, A2 and A4. You can find out more on our page Concession motorways in Poland.

All the key answers about the Polish e-TOLL toll system.
Does viaTOLL still apply in Poland if I travel on to Poland through the Czech Republic?
No, viaTOLL has already been abolished. Since 2021, the toll in Poland has been collected via the e-TOLL system.
How do I pay the toll via e-TOLL?
Via the e-TOLL app or an on-board device (OBU or ZSL), your location is recorded by GPS and the kilometres driven on toll routes are billed automatically; payment is made by bank transfer, cash, payment card, fleet card or mobile payment.
Since when has e-TOLL applied in Poland?
Since 2021, the toll in Poland has been collected via the e-TOLL system. The former viaTOLL system was abolished and is no longer supported.
What is the difference between viaTOLL, viaBOX and e-TOLL?
viaTOLL was the former electronic toll system (since 01.07.2011 for vehicles over 3.5 t GVW); payment was made with the viaBOX, a vehicle device. e-TOLL has replaced this system. Instead of the viaBOX, you now use the e-TOLL app or an on-board device (OBU or ZSL).
Which devices do I need for e-TOLL?
You can use the e-TOLL app or an on-board device: an OBU (on-board unit) or a ZSL on-board device. The devices collect data for the automatic billing of the toll. The former viaBOX is no longer supported.
How is the toll calculated with e-TOLL?
Using satellite-based vehicle tracking (GPS), the system records which kilometres you drive on toll routes. Because the charges are calculated based on the distance driven, this is a distance-based toll.
Do I have to register for e-TOLL in advance?
Yes. Your vehicle must be registered in the system, online or on site. After registering in the e-TOLL app, you create a billing account through which the recorded toll is billed.
How do I top up my e-TOLL account and which payment methods are there?
You can top up your account by bank transfer or by paying in cash at the customer service points (MOK). Other ways to pay the toll are a payment card (e.g. credit card), a fleet card (or fuel card) or a mobile payment (BLIK, PayByLink).
Do I have to use e-TOLL as a car or motorcycle driver?
Vehicles up to 3.5 t GVW (e.g. cars and motorcycles) generally only pay on privately operated motorway sections, depending on the route at toll stations (cash or credit card) or electronically. For vehicles over 3.5 t GVW, such as trailer combinations and motorhomes, e-TOLL is mandatory on public roads. You can find out more on the page Toll in Poland.
What are concession motorways and does e-TOLL apply there?
Concession motorways are privately financed motorways that are built, operated and financed by private companies. The toll there can generally be paid in cash or by card. You can find out more on the page Concession motorways in Poland.
