Paying Distance-Based Tolls in Poland

Previously viaTOLL, Now e-TOLL

viaTOLL: Electronic Toll System (Outdated)

This electronic toll system has been used since 01 July 2011 on selected sections of Polish roads. It applied to vehicles over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight (GVW). Accordingly, vehicle owners were required to pay tolls on viaTOLL road sections. The toll under viaTOLL was paid using the viaBOX.

By purchasing a viaBOX (on-board device), you were able to comply with your toll obligation. The viaBOX could be obtained at viaTOLL service and distribution points. Registration itself was free of charge; however, a deposit had to be paid for the viaBOX. In addition, the registered viaBOX had to be topped up with credit, as the toll could only be paid after the account was funded. However, the viaTOLL system is outdated and today you must pay your distance-based toll in Poland using the e-TOLL system.

e-TOLL (App) and Toll Settlement Device (OBU or ZSL On-Board Unit)

Since October 2021, you must pay your toll via e-TOLL. The device previously required for viaTOLL in the form of the viaBOX has been replaced in the e-TOLL system by an OBU (On-Board Unit) or ZSL on-board device. These two devices collect data and enable automatic toll settlement.

The e-TOLL system uses satellite-based vehicle tracking (GPS), meaning that once the e-TOLL app or on-board device is activated, the location of your vehicle can be recorded. This makes it possible to calculate and sum up the kilometers driven on toll roads. As the charges are calculated based on the distance traveled, the toll is collected in the form of a distance-based toll.

How Do I Pay the Recorded Toll with e-TOLL?

After registering with the e-TOLL app, you must create a settlement account. You can top up your account by transferring funds via bank transfer to your app account or by making cash payments at customer service centers (MOK). Other payment options include:

  • a payment card (e.g., credit card)
  • a fleet card (fuel card)
  • a mobile payment (BLIK, PayByLink)
