If you like to use Switzerland as a transit country on your way to your travel destination, you may soon face additional costs. For the use of toll roads, it is planned that an additional fee will be charged alongside the vignette. Parliament has approved a so-called transit fee for foreign transit travelers, which is to be charged in addition to the existing vignette requirement.
This fee applies to all travelers who merely pass through Switzerland on their way to their holiday destination (for example, Italy) and do not plan a longer stay in the country.
The aim of this measure is to reduce the risk of traffic congestion, particularly at the Gotthard Tunnel. Due to the high volume of traffic, significant congestion occurs there on a regular basis. Member of the National Council Simon Stadler emphasizes that the situation at the Gotthard has worsened considerably over the past ten years and that traffic congestion now occurs almost every weekend between spring and autumn.
Since around one third of passenger traffic across the Alps consists purely of transit traffic, the introduction of a transit fee is considered a reasonable solution.
The transit fee applies to anyone traveling through Switzerland without a noticeable stay. If you stay overnight in the country or spend money there, you are no longer considered a transit traveler and are exempt from the fee. However, if you travel through Switzerland without any stopover, you will be classified as a transit traveler and must pay the fee.
Specifically, this means: If you cross the country within a certain time frame (expected to be around twelve hours), a payment will automatically be required.
The planned fee is around 21 Swiss francs, which currently corresponds to approximately 23 euros (as of 30/03/2026). It will be charged in addition to the regular vignette. Therefore, it is important to continue observing the general toll regulations in Switzerland.
It is also being discussed that the amount of the fee may be flexible. It could vary depending on traffic volume, time of day, or day of the week. On busy travel days, the fee could be higher than during quieter periods. Vehicles subject to the transit fee are expected to be automatically recorded via cameras at entry and exit points.
A specific date for the introduction of the transit fee has not yet been determined. However, it is assumed that constitutional changes may be required for its implementation.
Please note the applicable toll regulations when traveling to Switzerland. Additional special toll fees may apply for the use of Alpine passes or tunnels. Furthermore, depending on the vehicle class, there is either a vignette requirement or an obligation to pay the heavy vehicle fee.
