Slovakia: D1 near the Tatra foothills fully closed twice until 15 November 2026
On the central east-west motorway D1 between Bratislava and Košice, travelers in the Tatra foothills near Poprad still need to expect two staggered full closures until November 15, 2026. The Slovak motorway company NDS is renovating a complete section of the carriageway there in two consecutive phases, lasting a total of around 46 days.
Anyone traveling on the D1 towards the High Tatras, Poprad, or further towards Košice should allow for sufficient buffer time during this period.
Which sections are affected?
The closures affect two sections of the D1 in the Poprad area: a section behind the Bôrik tunnel towards Poprad-West (around 27 days) and another between the Poprad-East exit and Spišský Štvrtok (around 19 days). Both phases run one after another rather than simultaneously, so as not to bring traffic to a complete standstill. The entire construction window runs from August 1 to November 15, 2026.
Reason for the closure and further construction sites
The reason is a planned road surface renovation of the D1. In addition, NDS is planning regular autumn maintenance work on several tunnels along the D1 in September and October 2026, including at Bôrik, Svrčinovec, Poľana, Branisko, and Sitina. These maintenance closures are independent of the 46-day construction project near Poprad, but may cause additional delays to the journey.
Toll in Slovakia
In Slovakia, a vignette is required for cars, trailers, and motorhomes up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight; motorcycles are exempt. For vehicles over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight, the distance-based toll applies instead, collected via the satellite-based toll system eMYTO with an on-board unit. Motorhomes are always subject to the vignette requirement, regardless of weight. There is no separate special toll in Slovakia.
Instead of dealing with the appropriate vignette for each country individually, it is worth taking a look at the Europamaut flat rate for frequent drivers. For 12.80 euros per month, vignettes for all eight supported countries are covered, with no commitment and the option to cancel at any time.
The Europamaut team wishes you a pleasant journey!
