Slovakia: Road resurfacing on the D1 in the Tatra foothills until November 15, 2026 AI generated

On the central east-west motorway D1 between Bratislava and Košice, travellers in the Tatra foothills near Poprad still need to expect lane closures until 15 November 2026. The Slovak motorway company NDS is resurfacing the carriageway there in sections over two consecutive phases totalling around 46 days; traffic will be directed onto the lanes that remain open.

Anyone travelling on the D1 towards the High Tatras, Poprad or further towards Košice should allow for sufficient buffer time during this period. Status of this report: 20 September 2026. Before setting off, check whether the restrictions are still in place via the latest NDS traffic restrictions.

Which sections are affected?

The closures affect two sections of the D1 in the Poprad area: a section beyond the Bôrik tunnel heading towards Poprad-West (around 27 days) and another between the Poprad-East exit and Spišský Štvrtok (around 19 days). Both phases run one after the other rather than simultaneously, so as not to bring traffic to a complete standstill. The overall construction window runs from 1 August to 15 November 2026.

Reason for the closure and further construction sites

The closure is due to planned carriageway resurfacing on the D1. In addition, in autumn 2026 the NDS is carrying out regular maintenance work on several motorway tunnels, including Bôrik and Branisko (D1), Svrčinovec and Poľana (D3), and Sitina (D2). These maintenance closures are independent of the 46-day construction project near Poprad, but they may cause additional delays.

Tolls in Slovakia

In Slovakia, the vignette requirement applies to cars and motorhomes registered as cars (class M1) regardless of weight, as well as to vehicles and combinations up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight; for combinations over 3.5 t, the trailer additionally requires its own vignette. Motorcycles are exempt from this. Other vehicles over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight are instead subject to the distance-based toll, collected via the satellite-based eMYTO toll system using an on-board unit. Motorhomes registered as cars always remain subject to the vignette requirement regardless of weight. On 1 January 2027, Slovakia will switch its distance-based toll to a new system: anyone currently using an on-board unit from operator SkyToll will need to re-register their vehicle (with the national provider CzechToll from 1 December 2026) and will receive a new on-board unit. Rates and the tolled road network remain unchanged. There is no separate special toll in Slovakia.

Rather than arranging the right vignette separately for each country, frequent travellers may find it worthwhile to look into the Vignette Flat Rate. For 12.80 euros* per month, vignettes for all eight supported countries are covered.
