Semester Break and Ski World Cup

Starting this coming weekend, the semester break begins in Vienna and Lower Austria. Many families use the start of the holidays for a ski weekend or even a trip abroad. This travel enthusiasm will also be clearly noticeable in traffic. From Friday (30 January 2026), you should expect increased traffic volumes and long traffic jams. The risk of congestion will rise especially near Vienna and on access roads to the ski regions.

However, it is not only the start of the holidays that will lead to increased travel traffic, but also the Ski World Cup in Schladming. This event also takes place around the same period (27–28 January 2026) and will further intensify congestion on major traffic routes.

Which routes are particularly prone to traffic jams?

You should try to avoid the following main traffic routes during your journey:

  • West Motorway (A1): Greater Vienna area
  • Southern Motorway (A2)
  • Semmering Expressway (S6): towards Styrian ski resorts
  • Pyhrn Motorway (A9)
  • Tauern Motorway (A10)

In general, it is recommended to travel outside peak travel times and, if possible, consider using public transport.

During the Ski World Cup, many routes towards the Enns Valley (Ennstal) are expected to be prone to congestion. The return journey coincides with the start of the semester break, which may lead to delays, especially on the Ennstal Road (B320), around Schladming and on the Pyhrn Motorway (A9).

Getting to the Ski World Cup from Vienna

If you are planning to travel from Vienna to the Ski World Cup, you should consider using public transport. Schladming railway station is very well connected to the rail network. In addition, you can use bus connections and shuttle buses from larger parking areas and surrounding towns.
