Romania: Rovinieta for cars significantly more expensive since September 1, 2026
Since September 1, 2026, a significantly higher Rovinieta rate has been in effect in Romania for cars – the state road administration CNAIR has raised the annual vignette for passenger cars from the previous 28 to 50 euros, while the daily vignette rose from 2.50 to 3.50 euros. The prices for trucks and buses remain unaffected by the increase.
Vignettes purchased before September 1, 2026 retain their full validity until the end of their respective term – no additional purchase or exchange is necessary.
Fines are also rising
Along with the price increase, CNAIR has also significantly raised the fines for missing a vignette: the minimum fine rose from 275 to 500 Lei, and the maximum fine from 550 to 1,000 Lei (roughly 100 to 200 euros converted).
Anyone who regularly enters via one of Romania's border crossings should therefore check the validity of their Rovinieta especially carefully before setting off – checks are carried out by camera based on the license plate, without any barrier or toll booth.
