Brenner Highway: Even more traffic jams from 2025!
From January 2025, the Brenner motorway will only be passable on a single lane, because the Lueg Bridge, located on the Brenner motorway, is being renovated.
Not only will tourists suffer as a result, standing in traffic jams for hours, but supply chains and the economy will also be affected. The head of the Austrian motorway company defends his concept, saying that keeping one lane open avoids a complete closure. That is true, but for 3 years the bridge will be available with two lanes for 170 days a year and only one lane the rest of the time. In addition, there will be 15 days a year with a truck driving ban.
This could lead to delivery delays or even a delivery stop for some products, and prices would rise significantly as a result. If alternative routes prove worthwhile, delivery routes could be adjusted, but this is still being calculated. A proper solution is probably not in sight until 2032, when the Brenner Base Tunnel is expected to open. By then, however, it is hoped that the renovation of the Brenner motorway will already be long finished.
Whether traffic can be relieved beforehand by shifting it to rail transport on other routes still needs to be examined. You can find a driving calendar for the Lueg Bridge here.
