viaTOLL no longer exists – today you need to use e-TOLL

This article gives you an overview of how to meet your toll obligation (in Poland).

viaTOLL – electronic toll system (outdated, no longer in use!)

This electronic toll system has been used on selected sections of Polish roads since 01.07.2011. It applies to vehicles with a total weight of more than 3.5 t, meaning they are obliged to pay the toll on viaTOLL road sections. The toll collected via viaTOLL is paid using the viaBOX.

By purchasing a viaBOX (on-board device) at viaTOLL service and sales points and registering there, you can meet your toll obligation. Registration itself is free of charge, but you must pay a deposit for the viaBOX. In addition, the registered viaBOX must be topped up with credit, since the toll can only be paid once it has been topped up.

e-TOLL (app) and device for toll collection (OBU or ZSL on-board device)

Since October 2021, you must pay your toll via e-TOLL. The device that was previously required to pay the toll under the old viaTOLL system in the form of the viaBOX has been replaced by an OBU (on-board unit) or ZSL on-board device under e-TOLL. These two devices collect data that enables automatic toll billing. e-TOLL uses satellite-based vehicle location (GPS), so that once the e-TOLL app or on-board device is activated, your vehicle's location can be recorded. This allows the kilometres driven on the toll motorway to be determined and totalled.

How do I pay the recorded toll?

After registering with the e-TOLL app, you must create a billing account. You can top up your account by bank transfer to your app account or by making cash payments at customer service points (MOK). Further ways to pay the toll include:

  • a payment card (e.g. credit card)

  • a fleet card (or fuel card)

  • a mobile payment (BLIK, PayByLink)
