Travel Journal Austria: Day 6

The sixth day of my journey brought another highlight: a drive along the famous Grossglockner High Alpine Road, one of the most impressive panoramic roads in Europe. The road runs through the Hohe Tauern National Park and offers breathtaking views of Austria's highest mountain, the Grossglockner.

Grossglockner High Alpine Road

The drive began early in the morning, as the first rays of sunlight turned the mountain peaks golden. Every bend of the High Alpine Road revealed a new, spectacular view – deep valleys, rugged peaks and vast alpine pastures. I kept stopping at various viewpoints to admire the magnificent natural scenery and take photos.

A special moment was the stop at the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe viewpoint. From here I had a direct view of the Grossglockner and the Pasterze Glacier, a fascinating world of ice that is constantly changing. The visitor center offered interesting insights into the geology and ecology of the region.

Further along the road, I reached the Hochtor Pass, the highest point of the Grossglockner High Alpine Road. The landscape up here was barren and rocky, but of a wild beauty. The cool, fresh air and the vastness of the panorama were simply overwhelming.

The drive also took me through idyllic alpine villages with traditional Austrian houses, where I took a short break. In a cozy inn, I enjoyed a lunch consisting of local specialties such as bacon dumpling soup and apple strudel.

The drive along the Grossglockner High Alpine Road was not only a visual experience, but also a journey through the natural and cultural history of Austria. Every kilometer of the route offered something unique and allowed me to fully enjoy the majestic beauty of the alpine landscape. Exhausted but happy, I ended this day with countless new impressions and a deep appreciation for the natural wonders of Austria.
