Hungary: M1, M7 and M0 near Budapest with lane closures from 17 October 2026 until mid-November AI generated

On the motorways southwest of Budapest, travelers must expect several lane closures starting Saturday, 17 October 2026, until an expected mid-November. The Hungarian road authority Magyar Közút is renovating the carriageway in several stages on the shared section of M1 and M7, on the M7 and on the M0, mainly in the area of Budaörs, Törökbálint and Diósd.

The M1 runs from Budapest to the Austrian border at Hegyeshalom, the M7 to Lake Balaton and onward towards Croatia. Both routes, like the M0, require a vignette; anyone driving here needs the vignette for Hungary (e-matrica).

The first stages at a glance

17 to 19 October: At the point where the M1 and M7 diverge near Budaörs, the middle lane will be closed. Traffic towards the M7 will use the inner lane, traffic towards the M1 the outer lane. On the M7 towards Lake Balaton, the exit to the M0 and to road 8103 is closed, with the detour running via the Érd junction.

19 to 20 October: On the M7 towards Budapest, at the Budaörs junction (Sport utca), the outer of the two deceleration lanes will be closed, while the exit remains open.

20 to 21 October: On the M7 towards Budapest, in the area of the M0 junction, the outer lane will be closed for around 500 meters, with traffic running on the inner lane.

For the period after that, Magyar Közút has announced further stages. At the time of research, exact dates were not yet available.

Additional risk of traffic jams on the M0

In addition, the Deák Ferenc Bridge on the M0 is partially closed until 20 October. According to Hungarian media reports, on the first day of the closure this caused a tailback of more than 15 kilometers. Anyone traveling around Budapest or coming from the direction of Lake Balaton should allow significantly more time and avoid peak hours.

Hungary toll at a glance

For cars, motorcycles and motorhomes up to 3.5 t GVW, the digital vignette requirement (e-Matrica) applies on motorways and expressways. It is a flat fee for a fixed period. Unlike in many other countries, motorcycles in Hungary are not exempt from the vignette requirement.

For trucks and buses over 3.5 t GVW, the distance-based toll of the HU-GO system applies instead. Its amount depends on factors such as road category, distance driven, vehicle class and emission class. Motorhomes remain subject to the e-Matrica vignette requirement (category D2) even above 3.5 t GVW and do not switch to HU-GO. Hungary has no separate special toll.
