Hungary: Motorway vignette to become more expensive in 2027 (new prices already known)
Anyone travelling through Hungary by car in 2027 will have to dig deeper into their pockets for the motorway vignette (e-matrica): the Hungarian authorities have already published the new prices in September 2026. From 1 January 2027, the national annual vignette for cars (category D1) will rise from 61,760 to 62,560 forints (equivalent to around 154 euros, depending on the exchange rate) – an increase of 800 forints or 1.3 percent.
The reason for the increase is the automatic price adjustment to the Hungarian consumer price index (KSH) for August, which the specialist portal autopalyamatrica.hu cites as the basis for the tariffs set by ministerial decree. This affects not only the annual vignettes, but all validity periods as well as the back-payment fees for missing vignettes.
These prices apply from 2027
In addition to the national annual vignette for cars, the other validity periods in category D1 are also rising: the county annual vignette (valid only for a single Hungarian administrative region) will cost 7,280 forints from 2027 instead of 7,190 forints, while the day vignette will be 5,630 forints. For motorhomes and other category D2 vehicles, the national annual vignette will rise to 88,790 forints (around 219 euros) in 2027. In Hungary, this category also applies to motorhomes over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight – they remain subject to the vignette requirement and, unlike trucks, do not switch to distance-based tolls.
The back-payment fee is also rising
Anyone caught without a valid vignette on a toll-liable Hungarian motorway will also pay more from 2027: the basic fee for a back payment within the first 75 days will rise from 27,790 to 28,150 forints, and after that from 95,730 to 96,970 forints. Hungary toll at a glance
For cars, motorcycles and motorhomes up to 3.5 t GVW, the digital vignette requirement (e-Matrica) applies on motorways and expressways. It is a flat fee for a fixed period. Unlike in many other countries, motorcycles in Hungary are not exempt from the vignette requirement.
For trucks and buses over 3.5 t GVW, the distance-based toll of the HU-GO system applies instead. Its amount depends on factors such as road category, distance driven, vehicle class and emission class. Motorhomes remain subject to the e-Matrica vignette requirement (category D2) even above 3.5 t GVW and do not switch to HU-GO. Hungary has no separate special toll.
