Sights: What you must see

Chapel Bridge

Historic wooden Chapel Bridge in Lucerne decorated with flowers

The Chapel Bridge is one of the most famous landmarks of Lucerne and the number one destination for impressive photos. Together with the Water Tower, it shapes the cityscape and connects several sights along the Reuss – from the Lucerne Theatre to St. Peter's Chapel.

On the night of 18 August 1993, a devastating fire destroyed large parts of the bridge. Only the two bridgeheads and the Water Tower could be saved. The destroyed section was rebuilt in just eight months, so that the new Chapel Bridge could be reopened on 14 April 1994.

Water Tower

The Water Tower was built between 1290 and 1300 and impresses with its octagonal shape. Despite its name, it never served as a water reservoir, but rather as an observation post, archive, prison, and later as a storage place for state treasures and war booty. Today it houses a historic weapons collection.

Musegg Wall

The Musegg Wall with its nine towers is part of Lucerne's historic city fortifications. Besides its impressive appearance, it provides habitat for numerous animal and plant species, including rare breeding birds, bats, and wall lizards.

Construction of the Musegg Wall began in the 13th century and was expanded over time. Today the nine towers are illuminated at night and shape the cityscape.

Lion Monument

The world-famous Lion Monument is a moving memorial to the Swiss Guardsmen who fell in Paris in 1792. The dying lion, carved in stone, attracts around 1.4 million visitors annually.

Spreuer Bridge

The Spreuer Bridge is considered a hidden gem of Lucerne. It owes its name to the former disposal of grain waste (chaff) into the Reuss. Although smaller than the Chapel Bridge, it is still worth a visit.

Swiss Museum of Transport

The Swiss Museum of Transport invites you to discover the world of mobility on road, rail, water, in the air, and in space. Interactive exhibitions, simulators, and multimedia shows make it the most visited museum in Switzerland.

Jesuit Church

The Jesuit Church is the first sacred baroque building in Switzerland. It impresses with magnificent stucco, an impressive organ, and excellent acoustics, and still serves as a concert and church space today.
