Roadtrip Recommendations Slovakia
Slovakia is small, but extremely diverse, making it perfectly suited for a road trip: from Bratislava on the Danube to Banská Štiavnica to alpine panoramas in the Tatra Mountains, many highlights are within easy travelling distance of one another. In this guide, we present three multi-faceted road trips (6–10 days), including specific timing and planning tips, parking tips in the cities, as well as a compact toll guide for Slovakia. Before you set off: planning is everything!
The perfect road trip route in Slovakia depends above all on your available time and travel style. You can combine cities, nature and hiking particularly well: for example Bratislava and the Little Carpathians, Banská Štiavnica and Štiavnické vrchy, or Košice and Slovak Paradise. If you already know whether your focus is more on culture & cities, hiking & national parks, or a "best of" mix, planning your route becomes much easier.
Trip duration 4–6 days: Ideal for a compact loop with 1–2 cities and one natural area (e.g. Bratislava, Banská Štiavnica and a short Tatra trip).
Trip duration 7–10 days: Perfect for combining several regions sensibly (e.g. West-Central-Tatra or Eastern Slovakia with gorges, karst & city).
Trip duration 10+ days: Ideal if you want to experience several hiking areas at a relaxed pace and also build in buffer days for the weather.
Tips from us
As a rule of thumb, we recommend: plan for 1–3 hours of driving time per day and no more than two activities. This leaves room for spontaneous photo stops, a coffee in the old town, or a short evening stroll by the lake. Also keep the season in mind:
May to October: The best time for road trips with hiking, gorges and high mountains.
November to May: In the Tatra Mountains there are seasonal trail closures, and routes at higher altitudes in particular are then (partially) closed. Plan more for valley trails, viewpoints and winter-friendly excursions.
Winter in the gorges: In gorges such as Suchá Belá, ladders can ice over. Suitable equipment and a conservative touring plan are especially important then.
Slovakia by car: starting points & parking in cities
The following are particularly suitable as road trip starting points:
Bratislava: ideal for Western Slovakia, the Little Carpathians and heading towards the centre/Tatra region. (Read more: Bratislava)

Parking in Bratislava: A zoned system applies in many areas. Our tip: it's best to park in a car park or in official areas on the edge of the old town and explore the centre on foot. Payment is often possible via app/SMS or parking meter, depending on the zone.
Parking in Košice: Here too, a parking space on the edge of the old town (car park/public parking areas) is worthwhile. You'll experience the city centre most comfortably on foot. Watch out for signage and tariff zones.
Parking in Banská Štiavnica: The old town is charming but narrow. It's better to plan on official car parks outside or on the edge of town and walk the last few minutes.
Road trip 1: Slovakia classics (7–9 days)
This route is ideal if you're visiting Slovakia for the first time and want to combine city and nature: Bratislava as the starting point, UNESCO heritage in Banská Štiavnica, and finishing with the mountain world of the Tatras.
Bratislava: old town, Danube, food spots (1–2 nights)
Little Carpathians (day trip): short hike & viewpoints (0–1 night optional)
Banská Štiavnica: UNESCO town with nature right on its doorstep (1–2 nights)
Low Tatras: ridge trails, peaks, cave regions (2 nights)
High Tatras: Štrbské Pleso, Starý Smokovec and panoramic trails (2 nights)
Bratislava and the Little Carpathians (2–3 nights)
Start in Bratislava with a relaxed day in the old town (strolling, the Danube promenade, viewpoints) and a good dinner. For a real road trip feeling, a short excursion into the countryside the next morning is worthwhile, as the Little Carpathians are nearby. Bratislava is the capital of Slovakia and is located on the southwestern border of the country. Here you can admire impressive buildings such as Bratislava Castle or St. Martin's Cathedral. Let yourself be enchanted by the charm of this beautiful city and stroll along the Danube promenade while making small detours to the impressive sights.
Parking tip: In the city centre, it's better to use official parking areas/car parks and explore the old town on foot.
The Little Carpathians are perfect as an "adventure warm-up": a short hike, a viewpoint, and then back to Bratislava or straight on towards the centre. This way you start actively, without having to plan long drives right away. If, alongside the urban atmosphere, you'd also like to enjoy some fresh mountain air, Bratislava is the perfect place for a relaxed start to your road trip.
Banská Štiavnica (1–2 nights)
The town is perfectly suited for road trips: you get UNESCO atmosphere while also being able to switch quickly into nature. Plan a combination of a walk through town and a tour into the volcanic mountain range Štiavnické vrchy (Schemnitz Mountains). Many travellers like to combine this with the viewpoint summit Sitno and a relaxed finish at Počúvadlianske jazero. (Read more: Banská Štiavnica)
Low Tatras (2 nights)
Now it gets more mountainous: the Low Tatras are ideal for longer day hikes and panoramic routes. Deliberately plan one "big hiking day" here, plus a second, somewhat quieter day (e.g. a shorter tour or a cave/valley programme). This keeps your road trip relaxed and flexible.
High Tatras (2 nights)
The finale brings the top league: the High Tatras. Hikes around Štrbské Pleso and Starý Smokovec/Hrebienok are particularly easy to plan. Road trip 2: Eastern adventure (6–8 days)
This route is perfect for anyone who wants to combine city vibes with gorge hiking and "hands-on nature". You start in Košice and have short distances to two highlights: Slovak Paradise and the Slovak Karst.
Košice: old town, cafés, culture (1–2 nights)
Slovak Paradise: ladders, boardwalks, gorges (2–3 nights)
Slovak Karst: karst plateaus & cave region (1–2 nights)
Košice: finish & journey home (0–1 night optional)
Košice (1–2 nights)
Košice is a brilliant starting point: you can arrive at ease, pick up your rental car, go shopping and stroll through the old town in the evening. Košice is the second-largest city in Slovakia and impresses visitors with a wealth of sights. Stroll along the main street and admire the medieval remains of the old town. Visit the museums of this unique city and be enchanted by St. Elisabeth's Cathedral.
A visit to Košice is particularly worthwhile for visitors interested in Slovakia's history or wanting to learn more about the city's historical past. Here you can learn a lot about the city's historical background and visit remnants such as the Urban Tower or St. Michael's Chapel.

Parking tip: Use car parks/public areas on the edge of the centre and walk the last few minutes. This is less stressful, especially when the city is busy.
Slovak Paradise (2–3 nights)
The Slovak Paradise is famous for gorge hikes with ladders and boardwalks. Plan at least two nights: one day for a "classic" route and a second day as an alternative (or as a weather buffer).
The gorge Suchá Belá is very popular: it's an ideal introduction, as it gives you the typical "Slovenský raj" experience without having to choose the toughest variants straight away. If you're travelling in spring/autumn or in winter, plan conservatively, as slippery sections can significantly lengthen tours.
Slovak Karst (1–2 nights)
As a complement to the Slovak Paradise, the Slovak Karst is worthwhile: karst landscapes, gorges and caves give your road trip a unique depth with spectacular views. Ideal if you want to make one day a bit more varied (e.g. an easy circular trail and a cave visit).
Particularly well known are the caves Domica and Gombasecká jaskyňa, which combine very well with a hike. These caves are among the highlights of the Slovak Karst. So you definitely shouldn't miss them!
Road trip 3: Malá Fatra, Tatras & Pieniny (8–10 days)
This route is for anyone who wants to pack as much mountain scenery as possible into one holiday – with very different characters: ridges and gorges in the Malá Fatra, alpine highlights in the Tatras, and to finish, river landscapes in the Pieniny.
Bratislava: start & city day (1 night)
Malá Fatra: "Jánošíkove diery" gorges & viewpoint summit (2 nights)
High Tatras: classics around Štrbské Pleso/Smokovec (3 nights)
Pieniny: Dunajec Gorge & viewpoints (1–2 nights)
Option: return via Košice or direct journey home (0–1 night)
Malá Fatra (2 nights)
The Malá Fatra is super varied: you can combine a gorge loop (e.g. via Jánošíkove diery) with a panoramic day. Deliberately plan one more night here, so you don't have to squeeze "everything into one day". After all, your road trip should stay relaxed.
High Tatras (3 nights)
With three nights you have enough time for: (1) an easy introductory day, (2) a big hiking day, and (3) an alternative/weather day. If you want to go high-alpine, be sure to check whether trails are seasonally open. For route tips and orientation: Tatra National Park.
Pieniny (1–2 nights)
The Pieniny are the perfect road trip finale: less "summit stress", more viewpoints and river scenery. The Dunajec Gorge is a highlight that many combine with a boat/rafting trip. Ideal if you'd like to travel a bit more relaxed after several hiking days.
Slovakia toll guide: short and compact

Digital vignette: cars (with trailer) & motorhomes up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight
For cars (including with a trailer) and motorhomes up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight, the vignette requirement applies on motorways and expressways. The vignette is a flat fee that varies depending on the validity period. You buy the vignette before your trip, choose the desired validity period, and can use all toll roads during that period. Distance-based toll: vehicles over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight
For vehicles over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight, a distance-based toll applies in Slovakia. This is not calculated as a flat rate but depends, among other things, on road category, distance, weight class/number of axles and emission class, and is collected via an on-board unit. It applies on motorways, expressways, and selected sections of class 1 and class 2 roads. Important: for motorhomes, no distance-based toll applies (regardless of weight); even if your motorhome exceeds 3.5 t gross vehicle weight, you generally still "only" need the vignette.
Special toll
There are no special toll routes in Slovakia. In other countries (e.g. Austria), however, additional special tolls may apply for tunnels or mountain pass roads. Vignettes are country-specific
Important for your journey: vignettes are always only valid in the respective country. A Slovak vignette therefore only covers toll-required routes in Slovakia and does not automatically cover roads in transit countries. So check your entire route before departure, especially if you're travelling through other countries on your way to Slovakia.

Practical tips for your road trip in Slovakia
Schedule: Fewer stops, more enjoyment. 1–3 hours of driving time per day usually works very well in Slovakia.
Weather & mountains: The weather can change quickly in the mountains. Pack a rain jacket, warm clothing and sturdy shoes, even in summer.
Gorges: In gorges, shoes with good grip and an early start are worth their weight in gold. Especially after rain or during the off-season.
Wildlife: Keep your distance, don't feed animals, don't leave food scraps, and for targeted wildlife watching, it's better to plan with experienced guides.
