The border between Romania and Hungary stretches over 450 kilometers. At the same time, the border also ends at the tripoint with Ukraine and ends at the tripoint with Serbia.

Border Controls

When planning your trip, please note that you must expect (strict) border controls and personal checks between Romania and Hungary. On the one hand, there is a risk of illegal migration, as Romania and Hungary are often used as transit countries to Europe. On the other hand, personal checks take place because Romania has not yet been part of the Schengen Area. It should be noted, however, that these border controls and their strictness could soon change, as Romania will also become part of the Schengen Area from the beginning of January 2025. Of course, border controls also exist due to generally applicable risks and security regulations, including counter-terrorism, customs and trade controls, as well as national security interests.

Waiting Times

In connection with the controls, there may be waiting times, the length of which is difficult to predict. You should therefore allow extra time for your journey.

Border Crossings

The border crossings connect these two countries and their rich history as well as cultural diversity. They are significant for cross-border trade, tourism, and daily traffic between Romania and Hungary. Below, we have compiled a selection of important border crossings between Romania and Hungary for you:

• Border crossing Nădlac (Romania) – Ártánd (Hungary): This border crossing represents one of the most important and busiest connections between Romania and Hungary. The border crossing is located on the European traffic route E68 and thus provides a connection between the Romanian city of Arad and the Hungarian city of Szeged.

• Border crossing Turnu (Romania) – Borș (Hungary): Just like the previous border crossing, this connection between Turnu and Borș has traffic-related relevance and is particularly important for international traffic. This crossing is therefore widely used by tourists and truck drivers. The crossing is located on the western border of Romania.

• Border crossing Sânnicolau Mare (Romania) – Jimbolia (Hungary): While the other two border crossings are of particular interest to tourists, this border crossing is known for its use by regional traffic. The crossing is located south of Timișoara (Romania) and connects Sânnicolau Mare with Jimbolia in Hungary.

Romania: Vignette Requirement (or Not?)

In Romania, there is the electronic vignette called "Rovinieta", which you need for the Romanian national road network. It is important to know that trailers (combinations) do not require their own vignette, and motorhomes must have a car vignette regardless of their weight. It is customary for the electronic vignette that the vehicle data and the validity period of the vignette are recorded in a database, so the consumer only receives a receipt for the amount paid, which should be kept. Distance-Based Toll

For cars and motorhomes up to 3.5 t, there is no distance-based toll in Romania. You need a digital vignette. At the Danube Bridge Calafat-Vidin, an additional special toll applies.

Hungary

The following section gives you an overview of whether you need a vignette and whether there are certain toll-liable road sections.

Hungary: Vignette Requirement (or Not?)

In Hungary, there is a vignette requirement for cars, combinations, and motorhomes up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight. This is the so-called e-Matrica (Hungarian vignette), with which the toll is checked electronically via the license plate. You should purchase the digital vignette (e-vignette) online before your trip, as fines may be imposed if an e-vignette is not available.

Depending on the vehicle class, your vehicle is tolled at different rates. For example, cars with more than 7 seats are tolled higher than cars with fewer than 7 seats. You can find more information about the different vehicle classes here:

• DM1: Motorcycles (weekly and monthly vignette)

• D1: Motorcycles (annual vignette), cars and motorhomes (vehicle class M1) up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight and up to 7 seats (also with trailer)

• D2: Commercial vehicles, cars, and motorhomes up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight (which do not fit into any other category) as well as – from January 1, 2026 – motorhomes over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight

• U: Trailers up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight (vehicles of class D2)

Distance-Based Toll

You must pay the distance-based toll if your vehicle has a gross vehicle weight over 3.5 t. This means that motorhomes (over 3.5 t gross vehicle weight), buses, and trucks have had to pay a distance-based electronic toll since January 2024, which is determined via the HU-GO system (electronic toll collection). The distance-based toll thus replaces the vignette. You no longer need it.
