Border crossings between Romania and Moldova

The Republic of Moldova borders Romania to the west and is otherwise completely surrounded by Ukraine. The border between Romania and Moldova is approximately 600 kilometers long and runs along the Prut River.

Border controls

Border controls take place at the border crossings between Romania and the Republic of Moldova. Moldova is not part of the European Union, so passport and customs checks are part of crossing the border. Therefore, travelers must carry passports and, if required, a visa, depending on their country of origin and the purpose of their stay.

In addition, the number of refugees has increased due to the war between Russia and Ukraine. As a result, many try to travel through Moldova via Romania further north, west, and south in Europe.

Important border crossings

Below, we would like to present the most important border crossings between Romania and the Republic of Moldova.

  • Albiţa - Leuşeni: This border crossing is located on the European route E581 and is an important transport hub for the movement of goods and people. However, due to its importance, traffic jams often occur, as this bridge also provides direct access to Moldova’s capital.
  • Sculeni - Sculeni: This border crossing is located on the E58 and also plays a key role for the movement of goods and people. The E58 is also used as a direct connection from Vienna through Slovakia via Ukraine, Romania, and Moldova to Russia. Via this crossing, you can reach not only the capital of the Republic of Moldova, but also its largest city, Bălṭi.
  • Stânca - Costesti: This border crossing connects the town of Stânca (Romania) with the town of Costesti (Moldova) via a barrage (river dam).
  • Ungheni - Ungheni: This important crossing includes a railway connection that links the Moldovan capital Chișinău with the Romanian rail network. The line runs over the Podul Eiffel bridge, providing good access to the Romanian university city.
  • Oancea - Cahul: This border crossing connects the city of Cahul (Moldova) with Oancea (Romania) via the R34 trunk road. Cahul is known as the third-largest city in the Republic of Moldova and is located in the southwest.
  • Radauti Prut - Lipcanii: This border crossing connects Lipcani (a town in Moldova) with Rădăuți-Prut (in northern Romania). Although traffic is low, it remains important due to the Drum Public National M5, which is used as a feeder route into Ukrainian territory. Due to the war, however, there is currently hardly any passenger or freight traffic at this location.
  • Giurgiulești - Galati: This small border crossing connects Giurgiulești (Moldova) and Galati (Romania) and is of special importance because it is the Republic of Moldova’s only access to the Danube and is also a border point with Ukraine.

Romania

The following section provides an overview of whether you need a vignette and whether there are certain toll-road sections.

Romania: vignette requirement (or not?)

In Romania, there is an electronic vignette called “Rovinieta”, which you need for the Romanian national road network. It is important to know that trailers (vehicle combinations) do not require their own vignette, and motorhomes must have a passenger-car vignette regardless of their weight. For the electronic vignette, it is standard that vehicle data and the validity period are recorded in a database, so the customer only receives a receipt for the amount paid, which should be kept. Depending on the vehicle class, you must choose a different vignette and prices vary. You can find more information about the digital vignette here. Order your digital vignette conveniently and easily from home with us.

Distance-based toll

In Romania, there is no distance-based toll, but you do need a digital vignette and must take additional fees into account when crossing the Danube.

Danube crossing: bridge toll (special toll)

Please note that additional fees apply when crossing the Danube. The river flows within Romania and separates the two countries (Romania and Bulgaria). If you want to use one of the many bridges or the ferry to cross, additional fees apply.

Moldova

The following section provides an overview of whether you need a vignette and whether there are certain toll-road sections.

Moldova: vignette requirement (or not?)

In Moldova, there is a vignette requirement that includes all roads. Motorcycles are exempt, as they do not need a vignette.

Distance-based toll

In Moldova, there is no distance-based toll; however, you must purchase a vignette to use the roads.
