What is the Villacher Alpenstraße?

The Villacher Alpenstraße is one of the most impressive panoramic roads in Carinthia and leads directly into the Dobratsch Nature Park. Over a distance of around 16.5 kilometres, you experience a varied drive through the alpine mountain landscape with numerous viewpoints, hairpin bends and opportunities for stops along the way. Unlike typical traffic routes, the focus here is not on getting from A to B quickly, but on the natural experience itself.

The road is popular with holidaymakers and locals alike and is suitable for different types of vehicles. These include cars, motorcycles, motorhomes and buses. Along the route you will find various parking facilities, hiking trails and viewpoints that make the Villacher Alpenstraße a versatile destination for day trips.

Opening hours of the Villacher Alpenstraße

Unlike many other alpine roads, the Villacher Alpenstraße is open year-round. However, different regulations apply depending on the season, which you should take into account when planning your trip.

During the winter season, which generally runs from mid-November to mid-April, the road is generally passable and even toll-free. During this period, the city of Villach takes care of the route. Please note, however, that no current online information on road conditions is available during this time. Weather conditions may therefore affect actual usability.

During the summer season from approximately mid-April to mid-November, the Villacher Alpenstraße is regularly open and subject to a toll. During this time, access is via the toll booth, where the applicable special toll is paid.

Additional time restrictions apply to the use of the road. Motorcycles are subject to a night driving ban between 20:00 and 07:00. There are also general entry restrictions: during the summer months of June to August, entry between 22:00 and 04:00 is not permitted, while for the rest of the year an entry ban applies from 21:30 to 05:00. Please plan your journey so that you take these time windows into account.

Special toll: what does it mean?

The Villacher Alpenstraße is what is known as a special toll route. This means that an additional fee is charged for using the road, which must be paid independently of the vignette or a distance-based toll. Payment is made directly on site at the toll booth.

However, this regulation applies exclusively during the summer season. In the winter months, the special toll is waived entirely, so you can use the road free of charge.

Overview of usage fee (special toll) prices

During the toll-liable summer season, costs are based on the respective vehicle type. A basic distinction is made between cars, motorcycles, motorhomes, buses and lorries. As with other special toll routes, different or discounted rates may apply depending on the type of drive (for example for electric vehicles). If you stay overnight at one of the guesthouses along the road, no additional costs are incurred upon exit, even if your stay is longer.

In the winter season, the toll charge for the ascent is waived entirely. However, please note that parking fees apply during the period from 15 November to 15 April. A corresponding parking ticket can be purchased directly at the machine on site.

Further notes on use

An automatic licence plate recognition system is used at the toll booths on the Villacher Alpenstraße. This ensures that toll processing is carried out efficiently and without any additional effort on your part.

Please also note that camping along the road is not permitted by the authorities and there are no designated campsites directly along the road. If you are planning an overnight stay, you should therefore use official accommodation or camping options in the surrounding area.

Alternative: Kärnten Card

If you hold a valid Kärnten Card, you can use the Villacher Alpenstraße once per day free of charge. In addition, numerous facilities of the Dobratsch Nature Park are included, with the exception of the Alpine Garden.

For passengers without a Kärnten Card, an additional charge of €7 per person is applied. Please note that if misuse is suspected, the matter may be referred to the responsible Kärnten Card office, which may result in corresponding consequences.
